What you'll do

I propose a guided walk in Mondello, which is part of Palermo, being only 8 km. from the city center but still, especially out of season, a world apart and a wonderful place all Palermitans are fond of.
During our visit I am going talk about the history of Mondello, which is between two mountains which in the ancient past were sites of Prehistoric and Phoenician dwellings and shrines. Once swampy saltworks, in the 15th century Mondello became a village around a tuna fishery, and finally in the 20th century it turned into a seaside resort with a spectacular beach housing several sports competitions all year round.
There are still fishermen living in the old part of Mondello. I am going to show the 15th century watching tower of the tuna fishery, the beautiful Art Nouveau villas built in the 1920s, and some of the Mediterrenean flora visible in streets and in private gardens.
I have been living in Mondello for over 40 years, I love it and I will share my personal memories and experiences of Mondello life in the past and in the present.
Our walk will end in the main square where I will explain characteristics of the Sicilian street food and delicious pastries.
Other things to note
our walk will last about two hours and cover the distance of about 2 Km. The map to reach us is on the first page of my website www.marcellacroce.com

I was born in Palermo, I love travelling and coming into contact with different cultures. I completed my Ph.D. in Italian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (WI. USA). On behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs I taught Italian at the University of Isfahan (Iran) and Kyoto (Japan). For over 20 years I coordinated and gave lectures on Sicilian culture for the Palermo Elderhostel Program organized in Sicily by Trinity College (Hartford CT.). I authored several publications in Italian and English about Sicilian traditions and food. I am an authorized tourist guide for Sicily.

Where you'll be

The first thing you will see is our garden and its Mediterrenean flora. During our walk I will talk about prehistoric Sicily, and I will describe the activity of Sicilian tuna fisheries. In the past hundreds of them were waiting all year for the arrival of huge tuna schools in the month of May. I will also show the villas and talk about the Art Nouveau period in Palermo . In Mondello main square we may see fishermen selling thier catch.

It worth visiting Mondello. It’s an awesome town where to relax. It was nice taking a walk with Marcella with her cultural background and knowledge about the area. I would strongly recommend to plan a journey with swimsuit and towel to enjoy the beach afterwards.

Our day trip to Mondello from Palermo was reminiscent of taking a trip to visit my nonna. It was a beautiful morning, and Marcella shared a few personal tidbits about her growing up in Mondello, as well as history of the area. Highlights include gelato in a brioche at the end of the walk, as well as learning the true secret of Mondello --- something we explored after parting ways.
