What you'll do

The Sabine hills are under an hour from Rome, and yet remain off the beaten track. They offer a tranquil respite from the frantic pace of Rome, offering both nature and sacred culture. This walk with include a trek in a nature reserve and a brief tour of one of the oldest and most important monastic abbey churches in Europe. First, we will walk the river trail at the Oasi del Farfa in Montopoli, where your guide has recorded over 100 different kinds of birds. It is on level ground but can be damp in places so boots are better. There is a good chance of seeing herons and egrets and hearing water rails. We are likely to see Nutria (Myocastor coypus) and smell hidden wild boar. Please bring your binoculars. Then we will proceed to the nearby Farfa Abbey. Founded in 470 AD, it became the most powerful Abbey in Central Italy. Charlemagne placed it under his protection in the year 800, on his way to Rome, to be crowned emperor. We will see small remains of the church of that time, and the Renaissance church built on its foundations. We can end the visit on the lovely Abbey campus, overlooking 'high Sabina', or with a cappuccino at the Abbey bar. -You may arrive by rental car to the Bar Sant'Anna, Granica (Turn left at the T junction at Via Granica) or I can meet up to 4 persons at Poggio Mirteto Scalo (train station on the Orte line from Rome).

Edward/Annamaria

Native of New Jersey, and having lived in Sabina for 20 years, I can guide English speakers to natural and cultural wonders of this region. I have observed 300 species of birds in Europe (and 600 more in the USA) so it seems fair to call myself a very experienced bird watcher. But I am also passionate about butterflies, trees and all ecology. Or if culture is more to your liking, I can guide you through the ancient main church and monastary at Farfa Abbey . In historical value, it is on a par with the greatest European monasteries; for starters, Charlemagne slept here in 800 AD.

What's included
