What you'll do

Soulbirding in picturesque Waterland, just north of Amsterdam. Starting and ending in the center of Amsterdam, we go on a 20 km bike-ride to see some of Holland's most characteristic landscapes and the abundant birds inhabiting it. In winter, many species of waterfowl, such as the smartly marked barnacle goose, can be seen with ease, as well as several different birds of prey. Birding experience is not necessary. A pair of binoculars is convenient, but not strictly necessary. You have to bring your own bike (bikes can be rented at the meeting point).

Learn more about Silvan

Silvan

My name is Silvan Laan. I am a native Dutchman (born 1978) and a long-time birdwatcher. I am also an artist (my website: silvanlaan.com), a husband and a father. As a professional birder, I am or have been affiliated with tour- and research organizations in the USA (since 2017) and the Netherlands (since 2009). I started Soulbirding as a movement to make bird watching accessible to a wider public. Although the science of birding (esp. bird ID) is part of the Soulbirding experience, to me, as your host, it is most gratifying if we can share a sense of wonder and awe for the natural world.

Where you'll be

We meet at Prins Hendrikkade 176 (Mike's Bike Rental). From here, we bike eastward through the Eastern Docklands (past historical windmill De Gooyer) and cross the river IJ to the medieval patchwork of meadows of Waterland. We visit the hamlet of Ransdorp with its old square-topped tower, then stop at bird sanctuary Polder IJdoorn. Our way back to Amsterdam leads through the cute village of Durgerdam, perched on the dike of Markermeer lake.

More tips

The weather can be harsh and unpredictable in Holland. The landscape is very open; biking against the wind can be a real challenge. A measure of physical fitness is required.
