What you'll do

Setting off from the beautiful National Theatre Building, together we’ll stroll the ‘route of the churches’ passing historical churches like the Cathedral and La Merced and your guide will fill you in on the history behind the graffiti that you’ll see along the way, giving you a taste of contemporary Costa Rican life. After our walk we’ll board public transport and make our way to one of the oldest cities in Costa Rica, Escazu, known for its spooky witch-related folklore. We’ll venture to a 100-year-old restaurant that’s known for its traditional fare, and where you’ll get a real taste of Costa Rica, with a choice of over 20 different Costa Rican tapas! After lunch, we’ll taste chicha, a traditional local drink that has been enjoyed for hundreds of years. Our beverage will also prepare us for one of the coolest local traditions: Costa Rican masks and masquerade, and we’re taking you straight to the legends. We’ll pay a visit to a legendary local master’s house, where three generations of the same family have been making some of the country’s most beautiful masks for celebrations and special holidays. Visit a special local bakery and visit to cafeteria in a house with 150 years.

This was the perfect way to spend the day after doing a pub crawl the night before. We learned about the history and culture of San Jose plus took a trip into the mountainsto see how the locals live beyond the city. The mask maker was such a happy man. We had a lot of fun dancing with the masks.

I enjoyed the family masquerade n the coffee art the most as it was unique and the mask maker was absolutely charming. What was disappointing though is that we did not get the 20 tapas as advertised for lunch, apparently reservations was not made prior for the group. Other than that, erick was nice enough to drop us at a nearby hotel to enable us to get a uber easily back to our hotel. We oso did not visit any bakery or churches route as advertised

Unique experience and I learned a lot I didn’t know about some buildings and sculptures in San Jose. Mask maker was unique and I liked the coffee shop and little town we visited. Nice group on tour too. Guide was helpful getting us to a place where we could get WiFi and take an Uber back to our hotel too.

Angel is super friendly and knowledgeable. The masks were incredible, and beyond that I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of great local food was included in the trip. Fantastic tour.
