What you'll do

Enjoy this moderate 2.5 mile hike through a majestic redwood forest which culminates with a stop at the gorgeous waterfall in Russian Gulch State Park. Most self-guided hikes to the waterfall take half a day, but thanks to a secret access trail, we’ll walk at a leisurely pace, take photos, eat a light snack, and you’ll be back in time for your next adventure. Along the way I’ll share some history and fun facts about Coastal Redwoods. Did you know that they are the tallest trees in the world? Touch the moss, listen to the trickling water in the fern creek, smell the forest's earthiness, and look up into the redwood canopy. You’ll feel such a sense of peace and wonder in this beautiful forest because all of your senses are engaged.

If you are new to Fort Bragg or Mendocino, I’m happy to act as your personal concierge as we walk, so feel free to ask me questions about what to do and see during your stay.

Note: The trail is a bit steep in one part, as it descends to the waterfall, so if you have mobility issues please check with me before booking. Thanks!

I am an author, a member of the Fort Bragg Visitors’ Committee, and a nature lover who agrees with John Steinbeck that: “The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always...from them comes silence and awe.” I’ve lived here for 14 years and served as an enthusiastic travel guide to countless visitors and there's something about the redwoods that moves everyone to a place beyond speech. I hope you’ll let me share this experience with you!

Where you'll be

We'll meet at a cafe just south of the Mendocino Botanical Gardens where you can get coffee and use the restroom. From there we will caravan by car to the trail head in the interior of Russian Gulch State Park. We'll make several stops on our hike to learn about redwoods. We'll have a snack and photo stop at the gorgeous waterfall then return by the same trail. It is uphill on the way back, so bring water if you think you'll need it.

We absolutely loved this experience. Anne was prompt, super friendly & told us bits of knowledge throughout the experience. She even brought a homemade snack to enjoy once we arrived at the waterfall.

Friendly tour guide, beautiful hike. Loved Anne’s attention to detail, pointing out spiderwebs, flowers, mushrooms, plants and other things in nature we may not have noticed on our own. Lovely waterfall and pleasant company.

The hike was fantastic—stunning scenery and great photos. Anne was both a fantastic guide and an awesome person. She was the highlight of the trip and truly made our time special. Can’t recommend her enough!

As a solo traveler and someone who loves to hike, I chose this experience to be able to hike with the safety of numbers. It ended up just being me and Anne on the hike. She was kind, gracious, and helped me to see the redwoods through a new lens. She allows for the hike to be what you want it to be...educational, lots of photos, and/or a great conversation...but all with a sense of wonder. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and this beautiful place with me, Anne!

Anne is a great host, a very knowledgeable guide, and her hiking experience is definitely something you don't want to miss out on! Any time of the year, the experience is worth it. You learn a lot, you take a wonderful walk, and you're given a wonderfully prepared snack at the end. What more can you ask for, from a local experience? :)
