What you'll do

We'll meet outside Newtown station then head straight up the main street and veer into a graffiti painted laneway to a hip local brewery, for a drink and get to know each other. Then to a buzzing, African street-food joint where we'll perch on little stools and people-watch, (Mustafa will look out for us so, despite no bookings, we should get a seat) while enjoying sublime fresh-cooked food best shared. A light meal, because after this we'll wind our way past a few of my favourite shops and places to eat/drink - hot tips along the way - through a park and centuries-old cemetery to where we'll line up with locals at a hall to dance in darkness. Inside we'll find our spot (I'll check our bags) and go crazy for an hour of non-stop dance to pre-recorded music: contemporary pop, retro classics, rock, hip-hop, you name it. There is often stomping, singing and at the end of every song applause. There's no one to follow, just your whims. It's freeing and exhilarating - and hot! No aircon. Definitely an eclectic experience but good fun. Since we'll be fabulous and sweaty afterwards, we can stop at a casual drinking hole for one more and/or some delicious gelati and back to the station.

Beth

I am a writer/film and TV director and have lived in the inner west for 20 years. I love the culture, style, energy, diversity and atmosphere of Newtown/Enmore. I am an aesthete and enjoy keeping track of quality, unusual events and new restaurants/bars/street-food joints. Besides pub choir and live storytelling, I get my energy, high-spirits fix every week in a hall in Newtown where about a hundred locals "dance like nobodies watching" because it's so dark no one can see you. Great fun, a variety of music and no experience required.

Where you'll be

Anything goes Newtown: the home of coloured hair, tattoos and every fashion style imaginable, but it's a rabbit warren of eateries, hidden bars and venues, so insider knowledge is best. We'll pass a charming cobbler, a must-try gelati joint and speakeasy to a tucked-away brewery then delicious street food. Walk via a park and old cemetery to a hall to dance like crazy. A shared drink to finish at an old school pub, looping back to the station.

Guest requirements

Up to 6 guests ages 18 and up can attend. Dancing in the dark is a unique, fun experience - dance like nobodies watching! It's non-stop for an hour; it helps to be reasonably fit. It has made me a better dancer and is a joyful way to get fit. The…

What to bring

Best to wear clothes you can comfortably do exercise/dance in. I wear lycra and trainers, and everywhere we go is casual. If it's cool bring a top to put on afterwards, or layers you can take off as the hall is not airconditioned, so it gets hot.

More tips

No experience necessary! Anyone can dance; dancing in darkness allows you to lose any inhibitions and respond to the music - every style. People of all ages go so you can take it at your own pace.
