What you'll do

Witness adventure a young startup to create innovative ecological business. Nishiawakura is a small village in mountains, where 95% of the land is covered by forest. There are only 2 traffic signals and no convenience store. However, Forbes Magazine listed this rural village as one of the most innovative cities in Japan. Since village initiated “Forest for 100 Years Project” in 2008, this aging and shrinking rural village has attracted many entrepreneurs to create ecological business. I will pick you up at 1:15pm at Ohara Station, which is about 2 hours from Osaka Station by JR Super Hakuto. We will come to nostalgic Kageishi Shougakko, you can window-shop award-wining wood crafts, natural dye cloth, etc. Then, I will give you a tour of A-zero’s circular production system. We will meet an eel farm manager, Mr. Osada. With his years of experience at aquariums, he will share the wonder of eel ecology. You can feed, catch & release, and pet eels! You can also meet the kabayaki-master Nogi, wild-deer-hunter Wakabayashi, and a good-looking former guitarist Kikunaga. The tour will end around 3:00pm. You can enjoy local hot spring and stay bnb such as Nokishita Toshokan or Motoyu.

Now I would like to welcome international guests and learn from your insights.

Where you'll be

Kageishi Shogakko is a nostalgic former elementary school building. Now it is a home of many startup companies. The immigrants & locals, young & elder are trying to establish their new business such as local food, sake, wood crafts, natural dye, etc. A-zero’s circular production system is a combination of aquaculture, forestry, and agriculture. Waste wood from lumber factory heats up eel tanks that send water to veggie garden.
