What you'll do

On this occasion, I will invite you to actually play shamisen. Please rest assured that We will suavely teach you how to hold the instrument, how to make sound, and how to play the scales. A piece you will try playing at this time is a Japanese classical song called “Sakura, Sakura”. Although the melody is simple, I believe the scale may make you feel of ‘Japanese-ness’. In the workshop, I will also teach you the courtesy and manners to be respected in the world of shamisen, and I would like you to actually practice them thereafter. Although they are not difficult to practice, I believe you feel from such courtesy and manners a sense of facing shamisen. Nowadays, even in Japan, there are many people who have never heard the shamisen live. Yet, they are typically surprised at the beautiful tone of shamisen when they actually hear it. Please experience the sound which is just a little bit different from the other stringed musical instruments like guitars.

加藤

I am running a workshop called ‘Shamisen Kato’, where I sell and repair shamisen. I am also engaged in the maintenance of shamisen by the same old gears in the same old ways, like using sticky rice to cover the body with skin. When I was fifteen, I started to learn how to create shamisen because my father was a craftsman to create the neck of shamisen. Although I am not a shamisen player, I am proud of my job which support the players. Although shamisen is an original musical instrument invented in Japan more than 400 years ago, it is now positively featured not only in the traditional cultures of Japan such as kabuki and festivals, but also in various musical genres such as rock and roll and jazz. While I am on the job, I listen to piano tunes composed by Bach, Chopin and sometimes rock and roll and jazz. I think it is important for my job to listen to various kinds of music. In these days, the number of people who visit my workshop from overseas is increasing. It is my pleasure to come to know shamisen has become popular both inside and outside of Japan. I am studying to speak English so I can have conversation with such visitors as much as possible, though it is not easy for me to do so at moment. It is amazing, however, that even my broken English can convey what I feel. I presume my feeling of “welcome!” in my heart is passed onto them.
