What you'll do

For growing food, for wildlife and for counteracting climate change, forest gardens are brilliant. We discuss what defines a forest garden and why they’re suitable for any sized plot.

We look at how your garden can be transformed, starting with surveying and planning. We walk through the process of creating an easily edited plan. Please bring sketch plans &/or photos of your own garden and garden ideas.

Then we’ll move outside to our forest garden, with stunning views across the valley. We take a garden tour from a “people first” planning perspective, looking at structures, utilities, propagation and paths. We examine the critical elements of planning: how you use the space and how you space the trees.

After lunch we look at the types of plants in the 3 layers of a forest garden, what their functions are and how best to choose them. We also look at timescales and costs, how to manage expectations and realise a pragmatic plan.

To round off the experience, there’s a hands-on session outside. We set up a propagation space, establish a windbreak, plant a tree or shrub, and establish ground cover.

Each guest is guaranteed to leave a positive mark on the landscape.

I am passionate about forest gardening, moving to Wales with my family in 2015 to plant a forest garden and to establish Forest Garden Wales to promote its practise. It’s a productive, sustainable, wildlife-friendly and low maintenance way of gardening. I’ve attended Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden Design Course at the Agroforestry Research Trust as well as grafting, planting and pruning workshops run by The People’s Orchard. I hosted monthly forest garden tours in the 2018 season, and I give forest garden talks to gardening clubs.

Where you'll be

We’ll start the wildlife & edible gardening workshop in our beautiful Welsh farmhouse which sits at the top of a wooded valley. Then we’ll move outside to the original forest garden, with stunning views across the valley, with a look later at the newly started garden and coppice. Weather permitting, lunch can be taken by the restored farmyard pond. Please note, some of the land is uneven and on a slope and you will need to wear suitable footwear

The day was really useful for me, and Jake really helped with planning improvements to my own forest garden. He was really willing to answer questions about my own specific challenges and needs, and I now feel much more confident about what I am doing and continuing with it clearly - fantastic! He was easy to be with and obviously passionate about this subject, and gave me many ideas! The soup provided for lunch was delicious too. He was also extremely helpful giving me resources to follow up and some useful additions for my own garden, for which I'm very grateful. He made it a really useful and enjoyable experience for me, despite the cold wind, and I'm so glad I went.
