What you'll do

Because of the pandemic, this will be a private lesson. We will be on my porch as much as possible but will need to be indoors for the actual combining of ingredients at the end.

Making soap is easy to do once you have made it with an expert. Otherwise, it can be pretty daunting to try to learn on your own. We will discuss the fascinating history of soap making, and then we will get to work. You will weigh the main oils—olive, coconut, and palm—and I’ll be in charge of the dangerous stuff. You can personalize your batch by selecting from a variety of scents and herbs. Your loaf of soap will weigh about 1.5 pounds, and after a few days it will be ready to cut into bars. This is the size of a banana bread loaf, so you can cut as many slices of soap as you want from it, depending on thickness.
You will leave here knowing how to make your own soap in the future, including recipes and resources, like where to find supplies.
You can take the soap home or leave it with me overnight. Depending on where you live, I can probably deliver it to you if you decide to let it stay at my house until it is stable.
If you have a relative or friend who wants to take the class, send me a message and I can create a special 2 person class after we agree on a date.
Also, I have added dates and times that I think will appeal to people but I am pretty open to other dates and times.
Other things to note
This can be a messy process. Wear clothes that can get greasy. You can BYOB, although you will want to wait until after the weighing and measuring is complete before you imbibe.

I have been teaching soap classes for many years. I really enjoy sharing this fun activity and meeting new people. I am an occasional community blogger for Mother Earth News on many topics, including soap making. I have been really fortunate to meet many travelers to Chicago in the past ten years, as we rent two properties on Airbnb.

Sarah knows her stuff and presented the class in a very clear and fun way. She was also nice enough to provide class notes and soap making information.

I got this experience for my wife for her birthday and we loved it. If you are the kind of person for whom the idea of making your own soap sounds even remotely interesting, you will not be disappointed by Sarah's expertise and instruction. You will leave her home not only feeling confident that you *could* do this on your own, but that you actually *should* try it on your own at least once. As a side note, Sarah's home is beautiful and artistic. Every inch has something unique and special on it.

Like many things we use daily, it's easy to take their presence and function for granted. Soap is one of those. Sarah has a geniune love for the creative process. She started off by sharing some history, the means and methods of soap making and components that can be added and how they'd react in the process. She was very inviting, great to converse and laugh with, and went out of her way to deliver the finished product which had to remain thermally controlled and monitored.

I did this experience with my two teen aged boys and we all really enjoyed ourselves. It was a great way to spend a few hours and we left with an amazing "loaf" of soap that we completely customized with the ingredients Sarah had in the workshop. The process was fun and Sarah has done a great job of putting the time together to make it interesting and engaging. She started by explaining the history of soap making and the described the process so we had a road map of how it all comes together. It's hands on from beginning to end and Sarah even went out of her way to hand deliver our soap the next day. Thanks Sarah, we had a lot of fun!
