What you'll do

You'll get to see Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness from two different vantage points, firstly we'll head up to the Craigmonie Viewpoint to get a bird's eye view of the Loch and the village. This rocky outpost is the site of ancient battles and I'll describe the local history of the area including high speed attempts on the Loch, visits by Robert The Bruce and the mysteries of the Loch including a certain beastie that resides in there! After that we'll pop back down to my house where you can take a breather and relax with a a tea or coffee and a selection of baked goods cooked up by our local bakers at Cafe Eighty2 and Bad Girl Bakery over in Muir of Ord. Once you've refuelled we'll head down into 'The Cover' a SSSI and visit a rare piece of wet woodland - one of the best examples you'll see anywhere in Europe. This is where, river and weather permitting, we can sneak across the River Coiltie and get access to one of the few places on Loch Ness where you can get right down to the water. On the way we'll keep our eyes peeled for deer, red squirrel and if we're really lucky we may see signs of Otters. It's an active session and you may get wet feet at the river crossing.

Toby

I'm Toby and I've worked in tourism for over ten years. I've stomped, yomped and hiked my way around much of Scotland and I've huge amount of experience exploring the Highlands of Scotland. I'm a Gaelic speaker and there's not much about the natural and not-so-natural history of the area that I don't know, including our own mystery of the Loch - Nessie! My wife and I run Loch Ness Living where we promote sustainable living in the area.

Where you'll be

We'll head to the high point of Craigmonie overlooking Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness. You'll have a break at our house where you'll be greeted with a log fire if it's cold out, fresh brewed coffee and couple of friendly cats. Then we'll head through the natural woodland of Urquhart Bay and get up close to Loch Ness. The high route can be tweaked depending on ability. **Winter Update: the River crossing isn't always possible at this time of year**
