What you'll do

Don Juan Tours Arenal is a family business that through its tours teach visitors the whole process behind two very important products worldwide, Coffee and Chocolate.
Our experience: Don Juan - Coffee and Chocolate Tour, will take you to know the entire Coffee process, from the seed to the delicious cup of coffee.
Once the coffee tour is finished, we will start with the sweetest part of the tour, the delicious chocolate. Like coffee, we will talk about the entire Chocolate process, from the seed to the delicious chocolate bar and we will end up selecting some members of the group to grind the cacao beans and make their own chocolate bar. Once finished you will have the opportunity to taste several types of chocolate such as Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate.
One of our main features is the infrastructure we have, since the Arenal Area is well known for having a very changing climate, it goes from being very sunny and humid to heavy rains, even with a electric storms on some occasions, that is why that 100% of our trails are protected and made of cement, which will allow to enjoy the tour on sunny or rainy days. Families with children who need to take their stroller or people with some physical limitation will not have trouble walking with a walker, crutches or wheelchair.

I grew up with my family on an agricultural farm in Monteverde, where one of the main products was coffee.
Years later, they start the Don Juan project (which bears my grandfather's name) begins to show visitors the process for making coffee, and after a few years the chocolate tour, but for reasons of climate the development of cacao trees was not the best and that is why a small farm was acquired in the Arenal Area where the climate is optimal for the cultivation of cacao. I have worked with my family since I was 14 years old, I am proud to teach what I have learned not only to tourists, but also my colleagues Andrés Pérez, Axel Soto, Ivania Alvarado, Jorge Carrillo, Maria José Rojas, Rodmely Ibarra and Yeudy Cruz which are our co-hosts, who also do coffee and chocolate tours.

Where you'll be

With one of our guides or co-hosts, we will walk a distance of no more than 500 meters through a small coffee plantation where we would learn about all the processes such as cultivation, production, peeling and washing, drying, roasting and packing. Once the coffee part is finished, we will continue through a small Cacao plantation where we would learn all the processes such as cultivation, production, fermentation, drying, roasting and packing.

We had made the mistake of booking the Don Juan tour in La Fortuna rather than Monteverde, however when we turned up at Monteverde the staff were amazing and helpful and basically put on a private tour for just us as there was another tour running later. Our tour guide was Donny who was a great laugh and very knowledgeable on the subjects coffee, chocolate and sugar cane on top of that he would pick other fruit's on the walk around which was great. Overall it was a great experience being made even better by our mistake and the staffs willingness to accommodate us. Highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the Monteverde area.

This was an amazing tour. The location is easy to find if you are in the La Fortuna area. They have a easy to spot welcome center with bathrooms and gift shop. They have a few different tours out of the same plantation so be sure to read what each tour is- we did both the Coffee and Chocolate and Chocolate Night Tour. We decided to do both bc we wanted the nighttime animal experience with chocolate but we didn’t want to miss out on the coffee. The Night tour was amazing. MAKE SURE TO BRING BUG SPRAY! we started off by looking at different animals- like frogs, spiders, and even birds. We saw some fluff in the trees- SLOTHS! The tour guide was amazing at spotting the animals and even used our phones to take good pictures. As we walked the grounds, he spoke about the chocolate process- step by step and in the end we were able to be our own Willy Wonka! Highly recommend this tour!

Such an amazing tour!! Our guide Maria was so friendly and knowledgeable. We got to make our own custom chocolate bars and try their chocolate and coffee. I learned so much about some of my favorite treats! Highly recommend this awesome tour!

Guide was patient with my energetic 6-year-old. Informative tour about 2 passions of mine: coffee and chocolate. We even saw a sloth while on the tour.
