What you'll do

The SF GastroHistory Tour has something for everyone! We'll start in North Beach, learn about the fishermen and farmers who settled here and then check out what may be the world's best focaccia! Next stop is a family-owned Italian bakery (amaretto cookies! Yum!) and then a 120-year-old deli to sample fresh local olives, cheeses and salume. We'll then check out Chinatown, learn about the area and the fascinating lives of the early settlers from the Celestial Kingdom. We'll check out a Chinese natural-remedy store to find out why there's such a thing as $30,000-per-pound dried fish, and then learn the tricks of shopping at a Chinese grocery and fish market. The next stop is fresh Dim Sum, and then you'll hear the surprising history of the humble fortune cookie, then enjoy some fortune cookie samples. Time permitting, we can check out the BEST place in Chinatown to buy Chinese cookware and try some amazing dragon candy! We finish the tour in Portsmouth Square, less than 1/2 mile from our start point. CUSTOM TOURS!!!! Yes, I'd love to customize an event for you and your guests! Team-building? Entertaining out-of-town guests? Birthday or anniversary? I am flexible and would LOVE to co-create your dream GastroHistory event! Morning, afternoons, weekends--just let me know what you want to do, where you want to go and what days! Affordable, fun and memorable events await

Gabe

I'm a native San Franciscan, writer and tour guide. I shine in all those areas, but what I love to do--especially when travelling--is EAT! I love food: all kinds of food. My mother started a noted San Francisco cooking school (Homechef), and wrote four cookbooks, so I grew up steeped in SF's food culture. I'm also an amateur SF historian (my wife is an archivist for the SFPL) with a degree in Urban Studies with a History minor. If you can eat it, and it's in San Francisco, I know about it!
