What you'll do
One of the popular spots in Kyoto, Nishiki market has about 130 shops specialized in all things food related and souvenirs. As I live next to the Nishiki market and have seen the changing of shops and the atmosphere, show you the distinctive Kyoto food culture on this tour. We meet in front of Apple store's doorway at 9:30 and enter the market from the west side. You can see the state of the market preparing for opening. First, we have Washoku breakfast(choice fish or meat) at homemade delicatessen shop. I explain about Obanzai that is a Kyoto dialect for side dishes and how to enjoy Kyoto cuisine. Then, before getting crowded, I show you the anecdotes of the market and my favorite shops, such as Uchida(Pickles), Marutsune(Fried Fish Paste), Uoriki(Pike Conger), Hiro(Wagyu), Aritsugu(Kitchen Knife),etc. Enjoy talking with the venders! Some shops freely give out food samples, you can try if there is a space in your stomach. Our goal is Nishiki Tenmangu shrine at east end that gives us good luck for academic and business success. Let's visit together if you like. It is okay to stop by stores you care about or get back there after the tour.
I engaged in a travel agency for over 10 years and involved in accepting travelers at Kyoto station. I live near the Nishiki Market in the middle of Kyoto with my partner and checking new shops and cafes while taking a walk around on holidays. Of course I like sake, music and fashion as well as eating. I am learning English and French, wanting to travel around the world. Even for things other than tours, please do not hesitate to ask anything you do not understand! I am qualified as a general traveling business chief (national qualification), kimono dressing teacher. Where you'll be
The Nishiki market is called "the kitchen in Kyoto" and was a shopping area where locals shop everyday. However, along with the popularity rise in Kyoto sightseeing, it has changed quite a lot in recent years. We have full breakfast, and some shops can eat casually. It is not yet crowded in the morning, the best for taking a walk. Nishiki market is covered with a roof, so It is a tour that you can enjoy on a rainy day.
