What you'll do

When you arrive at our training center, we'll start with a short tour of the project space, from the ground floor modern kitchen to our green rooftop where we'll pick fresh organic herbs and vegetables for the recipes we'll enjoy. I'll explain the social transformation of Medellin's Buenos Aires neighborhood, pointing out infrastructure and projects that can be seen from the rooftop in the breathtaking surrounding mountains. I'll also share the challenges and successes of building the training center from scratch with my own hands. Back in the kitchen, we'll put on our aprons to prepare a delicious meal with traditional, less common Colombian dishes (rarely found in restaurants), paired with popular dishes from our community project transforming local produce into healthy flavors from around the world. But before we get cooking, we'll have an exotic fruit tasting and prepare a fresh juice for the meal. After cooking we'll enjoy the food and photos in our unique colonial style patio space, where I've recuperated city heritage with hundred year old doors and windows. And the best part: your experience has social impact, directly subsidizing cooking classes for low income Colombians!

Brian

An international development volunteer since 2003, I've traveled to more than 70 countries before starting my life project, Vía Cocina - Food Train in Medellin! My formal studies/culinary diploma are in French cuisine, and I've learned to cook with families in 25+ regions around Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas! With this knowledge I teach low income Colombians and Venezuelans to transform regional produce into healthy delicious flavors from 5 continents! Community members asked for affordable classes to help them cook healthier for their families, in addition to personalized entrepreneurial training for those wanting to start small businesses; tourism experiences subsidize their training and renovations in the training center! On October 28th 2019 I received a CPR/first aid certification from Red Cross Colombia, valid for 2 years.

Where you'll be

The Vía Cocina - Food Train training center is not open to the general public, so you'll enjoy an exclusive experience in all of our unique spaces. We are located next to the modern tram and a metrocable going up to the greenbelt park, so it's very convenient to arrive by public transit, where I can meet you, and I can give tips on enjoying the additional landmark sites in the neighborhood, including graffiti, local markets, bars and clubs.

I am not in a touristy neighbourhood, it is an extremely safe, up and coming hotspot with more tourists arriving every month. You will get to see what life is like in a 'normal' part of town.
