What you'll do

We meet in São Bento train station, hop in the train and in less than 30 minutes will be at the gates of Porto’s Mountains, where the best kept secret of Porto is waiting for you: the authentic village of Couce, completely surrounded by trees and mountains.

Step by step, we leave the city buzz behind, discovering Porto’s Mountains, where we will hike, walk by a river, admire goats and sheep pasturing and visit a hidden village (with less than 10 inhabitants), where we will rest, relax and enjoy a tasty picnic with fruits and Portuguese tapas with products of this region.

Let yourself be surprised by landscape contrasts, in a relaxing hike for all levels of experience (9km with the picnic halfway), through stunning trails that tell the stories of ancient watermills, the Roman presence and their gold mines and even an imposing shale quarry, while we feel embraced by the forest and pure nature.

I only hike in small groups. In my opinion, a balanced way to enjoy a personal experience and (my) Portuguese hospitality.
And regarding the picnic, I only buy fresh and local products (from small businesses also owned by nice people).

Olá! I’m Ricardo and I have always loved travelling, meeting new people, exploring nature, discovering local foods and, above all, sharing experiences.
I am an experienced hiker and after travelling for over a year, I returned to my beloved Porto and while doing my weekly hikes in Porto’s mountains, I started seeing it more and more as a little wonder that deserved to be shared with other travelers who also seek a close connection with nature and local culture.
I am also full of travel stories, fun facts and tips about Porto, which will be my pleasure to share in order to make your trip to Porto even more special.
Let’s take a hike?

Where you'll be

Porto's mountains offer breathtaking trails, where we will hike through different landscapes until we are completely surrounded by the mountain and its forest. Couce Village is truly a hidden gem, that even a lot of locals haven't heard about, where time seems to have its own pace.
Most travelers always get surprised to find such place so close from the city center.

Me and my parents booked this hike very spontaneously but thank to understanding Ricardo it took place the very next day and it turned out to be such a good time! Ricardo is truly great host, but not as much as the lovely dogs pack ;) During the hike we were shown a lots of hidden gems, told a lot of facts about the landscape and shared tips for our stay in Porto. The lunch/picnic Ricardo brought with him and prepared a delicious lunch full of traditional portuguese tapas also respecting my vegetarian wishes. As we finished the hike while waiting for a train we drank a cold beer together which was the perfect ending. We really enjoyed this hike a lot! Thank you so much Ricardo, it was great meeting you and we wish you all the best!

I'm not sure I can find proper words to describe this fantastic experience: it was a pretty easy but picturesque hike full of gooooood laugh, exciting stories, astounding and well-thought-out picnic (the minute Ricardo pulled out a sausage out of the picnic bag and put it on an improvised campfire he conquered my meat-loving husband's heart), cute sheep, friendly dogs, tasty wine. For good 6 hours we fell out of our gloomy covid-reality and spent time like with an old good friend. We enjoyed it immensely. We loved Ricardo's stories and jokes. We'd be incredibly happy to meet again!

You will have an amazing hike with Ricardo! He will take you to some beatifull local scenery. He will tell some amazing stories and very fun jokes along the way. In the middle we had a lovely picnic with some nice flamed sausages. Very impressed with his picnic skills. I think he almost mastered the picnic craft 100%. During our hike he also brought his dogs which was a lot of fun as well. Overal a great morning!

Some people seem to think that when they stop talking, the world will stop turning. Ricardo is one of them ! If you wanna rush trough gorgeous nature like Chinese with a picture here and there on precise spots, go for it ! If you need to be entertained you will. Pick-nick is very basic. We did fast walking for 3h30 with no other stop then lunch. Being back in Porto at 2pm seems impossible. We were back at 2:30. If you're more of a nature lover, or a sensory person, like to hear the sound of the river, the wind in the trees, rather than the guide's voice for 5 hours, better organise your nature moment yourself. If you prefer putting your feet in the water, rather then rushing to a bar to get a beer at the end with the guide, better organise the trip yourself. The train stations are Valongo, or S.Mart.Campo train station: less than 2 euro ;)

Me and my friend booked this hike 1 day prior. We were the only 2 people who participated that specific hike and it turned out to be the best experience we've had during our stay in Porto! Ricardo is absolutely an amazing host and we've had such a good time with him. During the hike he would tell a lot about the surroundings and shared his tips for Porto (which we followed up and turned out to be great as well). Because of our small 'group' we were able to have a lovely chat and we've had so much fun together. The lunch/picnic Ricardo brought with him was delightful and after we finished the hike and had to wait for our train we drank the best vino verde together and came to the conclusion that this was a truly unique experience which we look back on with great pleasure. Thank you so much Ricardo, we wish you all the best! Big hug, Chiara and Lois

This was an amazing experience that I’d really recommend. Ricardo was so friendly, the hike was so beautiful and the food lovely - Ricardo also did a really good job accommodating dietary requirements.
