What you'll do

We will be practicing traditional Turkish art “Ebru” (which is commonly known as marbling art) for two hours. It is the art of creating colorful abstract patterns by dropping and splashing paints onto a tray of oily water with special brushes. These patterns are then transferred to a retentive piece of paper. It’s a mesmerising, magical world due to the nature of the used materials. Playing with colors on moving water and creating unique patterns each time, helps an Ebru maker to discover inner vision and creativity about himself or herself. It also helps to ease anxiety and stress by providing tranquility to the soul.

The workshop will commence with a brief introduction of the basic materials that are used to practice marbling art.
We will then continue with learning the history of ebru, the techniques and application process of traditional and modern ebru patterns.

Lastly we will transfer them on paper or other materials such as an unfinished mdf or kraft paper to create your own design of a coaster set or your own handmade greeting cards to take home with you.

This rare art form is mostly about focusing on the process itself and exploring/experimenting with colors on water surface rather than the product but still you can expect to obtain a series of at least 4-5 ebru papers at the end of the session, depending on the time you spend for each of your creation/design.

I moved to Melbourne in 2016 (from Istanbul/Turkey), completed Masters of Digital Media in College of Arts-Victoria University in 2018. I have a Bachelor’s background in Sociology and eight years of experience in education sector.

I started to work on traditional “Ebru” (marbling) art early in 2015 and have been practicing it since then. During my professional life, I had the urge to play with colors and passion to use my creativity to produce tangible artifacts that reflect my vision and the way I see the world. Now I want to share my knowledge with people who are open to a unique experience – paint on water surface! I conduct workshops and short-term ebru courses for art lovers in Melbourne.

한국에서는 경험하기 어려운 마블링 미술은 더 특별하게 느껴졌습니다. 색의 아름다운 색다른 경험을 원하신다면 무조건 추천합니다! Marveling in various colors is an art! Thanks for Eda! It’s making me a special day.

Eda's class is truly unique. A very meditative quiet space. She gave great directions to arrive at the class. There was one-to-one and group teaching.

My friend Amy did this class with Eda as a gift. She had a great time, said Eda was very friendly and the class was small which was good and made some really cool artworks!

Never expected I can learn a very traditional Turkish art in Melbourne, it’s a way to express the multicultural element in this big city! Eda is very sweet and I can see how passion is for her art, she explain the art background, materials and tools very well. She is patient in every single technique and kind like a meditation for me when you tried this art and workshop. Thank you Eda for the lovely experience and good to join if you want something special in art! Thank you Eda.
