What you'll do

Our Sunday walk begins in the centre of the village of Abbeyknockmoy. Its about 16km-17km in total, and so takes around 3 hours at a reasonable pace.

A Sunday walk is a fine Irish tradition that still continues today. Part enjoyment, part physical exercise and part social event...its' got everything.

The countryside is 'gently rolling' , so whilst the weather may the changeable at times its not exposed or extreme.

The various sights of interest are detailed below, but the real joy lies in the gradually unfolding countryside that is classic Galway : Stone walls and the grass is green ! (as sung by the 'Saw Doctors')

My family has very strong links to the local community. I've been a resident myself for over a decade and have been running walking tours in Galway for many years. It's great to now offer an insight into an area where my relatives have lived and farmed for generations.

We have been involved in many community initiatives over the years including the restoration of the 'Castletown' railway station (as seen in the 'Quiet Man' film), saving the bogland from desecration and adding public artworks !

Where you'll be

From the village we head up Knockroe which affords a terrific view over several counties and visit the holy well. Then onto Ballyglunin where the famous rail station is currently being restored. It features in the opening scenes of the famous 'Quiet man' film that starred John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.
After that we head into the open bogland to see how turf has been cut for hundreds of years. We finish up in the famous Abbey itself.
