What you'll do

If you are staying at the Beach or Downtown plan extra time to arrive at the trailhead, and plan accordingly. There can be slow traffic headed East in the late afternoon to early evening.

We will do a 3 mile round trip loop hike that lasts approximately 1.5 hours. We will start about an hour before sunset so that we can watch the sun dip below the Pacific Ocean from the top of Cowles Mtn. This is my favorite regional trail in the area, and it goes up to the highest point in the City of San Diego; Cowles Mountain. The hike starts from BARKER WAY (NOT THE FRONT SIDE OF COWLES), and is 3 miles in total.

After the sunsets we will hike down, and it will be dark by the time we end at the road.

If it is your first time to San Diego I would be happy to answer any questions you have, and give you local recommendations of favorite places to visit, restaurants to dine at, or a bar to sip a local beer.

We can chat as we hike along, or I can guide you along the trail and we can just enjoy the natural surroundings and sounds of nature. My family helped to preserve 100's of acres of native habit in the region, and I would love to share my passion of the local flora & fauna with you.
Other things to note
Best to drive, Lyft or Uber to Barker Way Trailhead. Also, we will be hiking down in the dark. I will have spare lights. But please be aware of this. The trail is very good.

Where you'll be

LYFT or UBER would be a great option to get to the Barker Way Trailhead if you do not have access to a car. We hike: Barker Way Trailhead > Barker Service Road > Cowles Mountain Summit > Top 1/3 of Cowles > Barker Spur Trail > Back where we started. The hike is moderate to challenging depending on your level physical fitness. People of all ages enjoy this wonderful regional classic hike here in San Diego. It is best to drive to the location.
