What you'll do

Visitors to the sanctuary get to meet all of the animals. We take a walk through their habitats and talk about where they came from, what hardships they have faced and how they have overcome them. Some of the animals get snacks during the tour, other animals prefer to get pets instead, while others might prefer a different activity.

During the tour we meet and interact with pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, special needs animals and sometimes the sanctuary dogs.

The sanctuary is home to 16 pigs of all sizes. You will meet big 600lbs pigs, little 100lbs pigs, naked pigs, pigs who love belly rubs and more.

We also visit the rescued hens and turkeys who love to flock around your feet and ask for their favorite treats.

Other things to note
Wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Boots or waterproof shoes are recommended. During the summer sneakers are good too. Please do not wear high heels or clothes you would hate to get dirty.

I have been working in animal welfare and research for over 10 years. In 2017 I left my career as a college science instructor to cofound a farm animal rescue which came to be known as Heartwood Haven. We have rescued over 1000 farm animals ranging from chickens to goats to pigs and even special needs animals. All animals here are rescued and living their best lives here at the sanctuary.

Visiting Heartwood Haven was a magical experience. They did a fantastic job educating us as visitors but also facilitating connections with the animals. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to know more about the impacts of the food system, justice for animals, and/or wants to meet some really lovely creatures

Well worth the price (and in my case the long drive!). Not only does your admission fee go to a great cause, but spending time with the animals will give your heart a boost that you might not know that you needed. Also, if you are a diehard carnivore this tour will give you a chance to "meet your meat" (especially the pigs who are intelligent and friendly and as deserving as humans of leading a full happy existence). This experience will prompt you to rethink your future meat sources. With so many delicious plant-based meat options available now, the transition is easy. I digress, but not by much... 😁

Kate is very nice and my group really enjoyed the tour. We learned a lot about the animals and their history, and it was very cool interacting with them. Some of the pigs love belly rubs! Kate was very receptive to questions which we appreciated as well.
