What you'll do

Gargoyles & Grotesques! Creatures & Creators. Demons & Knights. These are just some of the creatures we'll see on our fun and weird tour. See, every building is designed to convey a message, like books, or paintings or operas convey information, buildings are doing the same thing. Turns out, it's a language we've forgotten. We still know it, we're just out of practice. Lucky for us, we have the greatest classroom in the world to learn our craft! Downtown Chicago, the "Loop," famous the world over for its skyscrapers and historic masterpieces. On this tour, we're talking ornament - never necessary, never arbitrary and they symbolism attached. Anytime an architect puts something on a building, it's because they're trying to communicate with us, evoke emotion. We'll learn to read our best historic masterpieces and decipher their meaning, these beauties are chock full of information, it's just, most of the time we never stop to look. We'll learn about modern buildings too, where did all the ornament go exactly? And why? Once you take this tour, you'll won't be able to stop looking up & I promise, you'll never look at a building the same way again.

Margaret

I'm Margaret, tour guide, improv comedian and a life-long Chicagoan. I own my own tour business and I've been giving award-winning walking tours in Chicago for ten years. I do it all, architecture, history, culture! I've lived in and worked in this city my whole life and I know all the nooks and crannies. And since I'm a 20-year improv comedy vet, I tend to get to the heart of the matter on things. My tours are never the same tour twice, I keep groups nice and small and because of my comedy background, it's never static or dry,

Where you'll be

This walking tour takes place entirely within Chicago's downtown Loop. We'll start by reading beautiful City Hall, the Daley Center and a tiny, precious bas relief that you will just love. We'll head to Federal Plaza, the best plaza for skyscraper spotting, there are so many architectural styles in this one spot, it is just the best. The tour will end in Millennium Park where there is more to read than you might think.
