What you'll do

A guided walking tour around Cheltenham and it's Anglo-Indian past. In the nineteenth century, many military officers and British Raj administrators came to the town with their families to rest, recuperate, or to retire, enjoying its pleasant climate and health-giving benefits of the waters – much-needed after the excesses of their lives in India. Their presence, as the popularity of the spa began to decline, carried the town forward into a new era - many of the town’s finest villas and clubs were built for them, and the artisan dwellings for the people who served them. Join our reenactor guide, dressed as Captain Henry Skillicorne, the man who developed the first spa in Cheltenham, as he takes you on a leisurely promenade through Cheltenham, stopping to admire the beautiful buildings, glorious gardens and sites of many of its spas. Hear anecdotes and stories about the people who to name but a few - and explore the town’s unique connection with the East India Company and the British Raj. The tour will end at 'The Spice Lodge' Indian restaurant to sample some of the flavours from that legendary era. This splendid building was itself once home to retired colonials.

Phil

I am well-known in Cheltenham as an entertainer, musician, actor and raconteur. Born and bred in the town, my interest in its history goes back a long way – the more I found out the more I wanted to know – and I am delighted to be able to share some of my knowledge with visitors to the town, to unlock some of its secrets, and show that there is a lot more to Cheltenham than meets the eye. I lead the tour dressed as one of my favourite historical characters, the man at the forefront of putting Cheltenham on the map, Captain Henry Skillicorne.
