What you'll do

This experience is for those who wish to discover an authentic Spanish Leathercraft Workshop and learn how to make their own Leather items. I will show the participants the use of the tools used for Leathercraft, many of which havent changed since medievil times. I will also introduce them to the variety of different kinds of leather that exist. Each participant will have the opportunity to use real Spanish Cowhide to create a Leather item with their own hands. In the workshop the participants can choose between a pretty travelling purse (with or without a strap), an original belt, a wallet, two different purses or braided bracelets. There is also the opcion of making a piece different from these which will be designed in the act...maybe something one always wanted to make....a handbag, a mobile phone case, a belt pouch ....if this is the case the teacher should be informed beforehand. Each piece will be unique as we will use technique such as stamping or embossing to decorate it. These techniques were introduced by the Moors hundreds of years ago and have a long tradition in Spanish Leathercraft. There will not be many of us in the worshop so we have the chance to get to know eachother without hurry. For those who dont speak Spanish I speak perfect English as I am originally from Ireland.
Other things to note
We will be using cutter knifes at one stage of the experience although for those who prefer the Handcraftsman will do the cutting.

Where you'll be

The workshop is situated in the centre of Madrid which is the oldest part of the city, in a neighbourhood called La Latina which is near the Main Square. It is an area where the biggest Street Market takes place every Sunday called El Rastro. El Rastro is full of Antique and Handcraft shops and stalls, together with a great amount of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. One of the main streets is Ribera de Curtidores or Tannery road where there are many Leather shops. The actual workshop is on a fifth floor with views to the south of Madrid; once the participants reach the entrance of the building they should press the 5. 4 button and once inside there is a lift at the end of the corridor which will take them to the fifth floor.

Michael excelled both as an instructor and a host, sharing great knowledge as well as wonderful conversation. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned leather craft enthusiast, when in Madrid, it’s a must!

Leather craft with Michael was great fun. It was great to be in the studio and see the array of creations and tools everywhere. We had a choice of what item to make and in which type of leather. Michael was a great (and patient 🙈) teacher. We were both so pleased with our leather bags. We had our experience booked for a Sunday and were greeted with the buzzing el rastro street market right outside Michael’s apartment. It was a nice surprise! Would recommend this to anyone.

This was one of those workshops where you get there and u get to work immediately, Michael explains whatever questions you may have, he tells you how to make your leather (in my case) purse and what instruments to use, how to use them, and gets right to it, so it is 100% hands on which was great because you actually learn a hands on skill! He is very knowledgeable, it seems he does this for a living so not just a hobby, he was very friendly and he was a great host!

I spent really great time and learn a lot from him. I already learnt before about leather work and practice thru the internet but nothing to do compared with learning direcly from the master artist who spent 30 years on it. Michael is patient answering all my questions, even my problems. he explained me about how to glue the leather properly and do the finishing (correct my error), gave me tricks to do embossing, shows me good products and tools, his studio is just wonderful, I love it and he had alot of good artwork as well. so if you are in madrid and try to do some activities about leather don't hesitate to go to Michael course.

What a cool way to see a neighborhood that is not on the tourist path in Marid, and go home with a unique, handmade souvenir! I really enjoyed this workshop, the view from Michael's workshop was beautiful, and Michael was a lot of fun to chat with as we worked together to made my bag. Highly recommended!
