What you'll do

Exploring the flora and fauna of a unique Himalayan forest on foot is the essence of this experience. With over 50 species of ferns, 40 species of grasses, 80 species of mushrooms, 300 species of flowering plants, and over 100 species of birds, this 2.5 hour forest walk has a lot to offer to the nature lovers. You're likely to spot monkeys and langurs, but there's other inhabitants such as leopards, barking deer, wild bear, porcupines, and jackals that rarely venture out during daylight hours. Located in the eastern part of the greater Mussoorie region, the starting point of this experience can be reached by car, taxi, or bus. After entering the forest, you'll be walking through a system of wooded mountain trails and streams. The trails I choose for you can be challenging or comfortable, depending entirely on your physical abilities and interest. You'll enjoy soothing birdsong and the gentle sounds of mountain breeze waltzing through the pine, oak, and deodar trees. Along the way there are impressive vista points from where you can see the majestic snow peaks. The pace is leisurely and the focus is to provide you with an immersive jungle experience.

Monica

I'm a long-time resident of Mussoorie and intimately know almost all there is to know about what to see and do in this serene colonial hill station--particularly the breathtaking parts that are off the beaten path. When I'm not conducting nature walks, I'm actively engaged in social causes for the local community. I'm an avid trekker and have completed many high-altitude treks in Uttarakhand and other hill states. I'm passionate about the hills and I believe the best way to experience the grandeur of hill towns is to walk, walk, and walk. And that's precisely how I would love to show the natural and non-touristy beauty of the Lower Himalayas to those who visit the Mussoorie area.

Where you'll be

Some of the mountain trails you'll get to enjoy on this walk (chosen to suit your fitness level) are Ridge trail, Rockfall trail, Leopard trail, Rhododendron trail, Mushroom trail, and Spring trail. The highest point is the Saddle from where you get a nearly 360-degree view of the Greater Himalayas. You'll see streams, watering holes, meadows, rocky bluffs, and a whole lot more--all devoid of any human footprint!

More tips

An honest self-assessment of your physical abilities is a must. Even the "easy" trails would involve mild ascents and descents over rocky/dirt surfaces. Trails are well marked, though.
