What you'll do

With this tour we would like to introduce our 'market and gastronomy' concept through an insight into the everyday life of the market and the Eldorado, a progressive conceptual hungarian-international bistrot.
We offer you a unique local experience without rush and crowds of tourists.

The tour starts with a guided walk on the market, led by Zsofi or Anna.
During the tour you can experience the everyday life of the small community of the market hall. You can meet personally with the local farmers and shopkeepers: an expert cheesemaker family, Károly the butcher and the traditional greengrocer family of Anna. You will get small tastes of their best seasonal products and you will get to know the history, anecdotes and secrets of the market hall.

Last but not least the tour finishes with a 3-course lunch at Eldorado, (cooked by Bálint) made from the daily market ingredients, focusing on traditional hungarian dishes with a creative touch inspired by my international cuisine experience.
Before the lunch I will meet you in the salon of Eldorado and I will present you the menu.

Vegan and vegetarian options are available for the lunch if you warn us in advance.

In the price of the tour is included the guided tour, the special traditional and seasonal menu. For your own credit you can try our local wines and craft beers.

My name is Bálint, I'm the chef of Eldorado Budapest and my co-hosts are Zsofi and Anna.
Zsofi is a licensed tourist guide in Budapest, she speaks fluently Italian, English and Dutch. She is an antropologist, interested in art history and local storytelling.
Anna's family-for 4 generations- runs a fruit and vegetable store at Rákóczi square Market Hall, where our tour takes place. She is also a certified tour guide.
I started this profession 10 years ago. I worked in Berlin and Budapest. My cousine concept is inspired by my travels through Japan, Myanmar, Mediterranian Region, Transylvania and the Hungarian countryside. 3 years ago I decided to open a bistro kitchen with daily changed menu, using local market ingredients. I run Eldorado together with my brother, Gabor.

Where you'll be

The whole tour takes place at the Rákóczi square Market Hall.
The market has an impressive history starting from the end of the 19th century. The building has very cute indoor shops, kind shopkeepers and an interior spectacle of worked steel structure.
Now it's mainly popular within locals, it hasn't been discovered by the crowd of tourists yet.
Zsofi, Anna and I, we share the passion to revitalize the old fame of the district and the market.

Merci.

A hidden gem beides the big and very touristy market. This tour is perfect for food enthusiasts with a good appetite. Both Zsofi as our tour guide and Balint as the cook made this experience just wonderful. It was very personal, highly informative and in end so friendly that we felt like being old friends!

Szofi and Bálint were wonderful to spend time with! Szofi showed us around the Rákóczi Market and gave us a good history of the building and the area. She then took us to some great stalls, all local and run by the same families for decades. We sampled beautiful cured meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, and had the opportunity to ask the vendors questions about their products. After this, Bálint cooked us a delicious three course lunch of Hungarian food with a modern touch. He has many years experience as a chef in dozens of countries and he used this to prepare a beautiful meal for us, both traditional but fresh and not too heavy. Best of all, both Szofi and Bálint sat and spoke with us while we ate (we were lucky to have this as Wednesday - the day we went - is a quieter day at the market when Bálint has more time to speak) and enjoyed a beautiful bottle of Hungarian Welschriesling. They generously shared their knowledge with us and showed real interest in our lives and travels. If you want an experience that is down to earth, original and genuine - the opposite of many of the big cookie cutter tours offered in many large cities - we could not recommend this tour more. Just like Szofi and Bálint, it was just perfect!

My friend and I did Bálints market tour and lunch it was our favourite experience in Budapest. It was extremely well organised, it began with a tour from Zsofi of the market where we sampled some meat, cheese and fruit from local vendors (some whose families have been at the market since the 20th century!). Then we had a 3 course lunch that was a delicious fusion between Hungarian and international cuisine that I really don’t think we would have been able to eat anywhere else in Budapest. We had the chance to speak with both Zsofi and Bálint one on one which was great as we got to learn more about the history of the market and about Bálint’s fascinating background in food. For example Bálint showed us some of the special herbs he used in his cooking and we got to taste and smell these as he bought them to the table. They also recommended a delicious Hungarian white wine (which was one of the last bottles for this variety produced by a vineyard) that Bálint went and got from another stall at the market when we told him the particular type of wine we liked. They also gave us some of the special paprika they use in their cooking to take home which was a special touch. The entire experience was highly personalised and you really felt like you got a look inside a proper Hungarian market and restaurant as well as meeting two lovely and interesting people. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Budapest.

Baliant provided the best Air bnb experience I’ve ever had. He is an amazing cook with an interesting history in the food industry, including years of experience making cheese from Hungarian goats. He knew the history of the market well and was extremely generous with food samples. We also got to make a delicious meat spice kit for four dinners and had a three course meal on-the-house.. The meal featured traditional Hungarian food, all homemade sauces with fresh ingredients from the market. In addition Baliant is a very kind, genuine and hardworking man who has a love for gastronomy. He made us feel warm and welcome and truly wanted to get to know us. I would recommend his restaurant as an essential stop to anyone in Budapest.

Nice experience but nothing really unique. You can come to that market yourself and receive the same.
