What you'll do

We will travel to SAN JUAN CHAMULA, indigenous village near San Cristobal de Las Casas, to witness nad participate in a traditional celebration of CARNIVAL. Before going to the carnival, we will drive to ZINACANTAN, where we will visit a local family. We will learn about textiles they produce and will try to make hand-made tortilla. We will also visit a cementery with a spectacular view from the 2,700 meters high. We will travel by transport from San Cristobal to both villages. The mean of transport and its cost will depend on number of participants. Please ask before booking. Chiapas is a state rich in indigenous culture, traditions, customs that are expressed through colorful parades and ancestral dances. Each town has its own dress and masks. The experience is more than visual: it becomes unforgettable thanks to the explanations about the roots of the customs and the legends that you will hear. Thanks to that, you will see it from another perspective. It's not just a parade or a mask: there's a lot of history and faith behind it! The experience is available only during traditional festivities,on limited dates in different towns of Chiapas. In San Juan Chmaula: February / March - Carnival June - Celebrations of San Juan, st patron of Chamula November - Day of the Dead

Learn more about Rudy & Monika

Rudy & Monika

I grew up with the traditions and legends of indigenous and mestizo peoples of Chiapas, where I come from. I learned them from my grandparents, parents and later, during my university career, I delved into diferent historical and social aspects. I also lived a historical moment in my town, witnessing the armed revolution of the EZLN (Zapatistas). My passion for traditions and legends continues to be more and more alive and I enjoy sharing it with visitors from Chiapas. I have shared it for 10 years, receiving very positive comments.
