What you'll do

Join me on an easy-going walk in the beautiful Sussex countryside at the foot of the South Downs.

We'll explore two ancient Sussex villages dating back over a thousand years, passing cornfields and a vineyard along the way.

We'll see traditional thatched and flint cottages and a beautiful Norman church, arguably the finest in Sussex, and the ruins of a priory built over 900 years ago. Please note that weddings, funerals and other events can stop us from entering the church so seeing inside cannot be guaranteed.

At different times of the year, camomile, sloes, blackberries and elderflowers can all be seen along the route. In autumn the hedgerows burst into colour, dripping with edible berries. While we won't be picking or eating any, I'll introduce you to hedgerow foraging and folklore.

The walk starts and ends at a traditional country pub that's over 200 years old. Refreshments not included.

This walk can be combined with my longer walk to a 300-year-old windmill with stunning views of the South Downs and a magical tunnel of trees.
Other things to note
This is an easy walk with no stiles, however, the terrain is rough in places.

Having lived in Sussex all my life, I love sharing the beautiful countryside and the secrets hidden along these ancient footpaths.

I've researched the area, speaking to locals and local historians to learn more about the layers of history hidden here, reaching back over 500,000 years, both fact and folklore. I'm looking forward to sharing all this with you.

Where you'll be

Starting and ending at a country pub, this walk will lead us along a lovely footpath shaded by an avenue of trees, through two Sussex villages, and by Boxgrove Priory, a ruined 12th century Benedictine Priory.

Along the way, we pass a local vineyard and walk through wheat, barley and cornfields along this easy 3-mile circular route on the flat.

We had already been in the Halnaker tree tunnel and windmill walk with Kathryn - also highly recommended - so knew what to expect. And we were not disappointed!

Go!! Kathryn was great fun and we learned a lot about the area. We would heartily recommend this experience! She was flexible as the weather was iffy and she was able to meet us at a different time

It was an enjoyable short walk with a view and interesting stories that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Definitely recommend

An engaging local person who included all the group in her observations. Her love and enthusiasm for Sussex came through.
