What you'll do

This is a one-of-a-kind experience to work in an intimate setting with an internationally recognized champion of organic farming methods and sustainable food systems. You will participate in hands-on tasks (which may include any of the following: water management, worm maintenance, planting, soil preparation, composting techniques, and more depending on the season) so that you practice skills that you will be able to repeat at your home or in your community. You will leave with a solid understanding of how our urban Atlanta homestead functions from the crops that are currently in the ground, to our process for water usage, to how we incorporate compost and vermiculture into our food system and other seasonally specific details. No two workshops will be exactly the same, though similar principles will be emphasized at each gathering. Throughout the year the tasks will change as each season will require us to adapt and respond. This experience is perfect for people who are just beginning and for people who are experienced growers and would like a deeper understanding of the systems that impact their garden/farm. It is my passionate belief that growing local food and training others to do so can unite and inspire each one of us. In turn, we can nurture our families and build resilient communities. For 20 years, I have trained hundreds of young farmers and built thousands of gardens and farms across the United States. I am a trained permaculturalist and a self-taught local food revolutionary. I have created hundreds of composting systems, raised millions of worms and fed countless people and their communities. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you in this engaging hands-on workshop.

This was the perfect experience for our family. The kids (ages 5 & 3) loved the fresh “snacks” and getting to plant some things themselves. Learning what makes a garden tick, like worms and how to feed them, meant a lot to us. We tried setting up a garden space in the backyard of our home in VA last year, with no success. Maurice helped us understand what we were doing wrong and made suggestions for a successful crop this year. Now we can’t wait to get our hands dirty growing our own delicious and healthy veggies! We also came away with thoughtful gifts (like seeds to get us started). Time so well spent!

This is a very informative and well structured experience. Myself and my guests enjoyed this very much. We all would go many more times without hesitation. If you go, do be prepared to get your hands in dirt and wear footwear and clothing that you wouldn't mind having soil in contact with. It will be a rewarding and very personable experience. The host is extremely engaging and informing, and also paces the experience to coincide with the interests and the time that is available. The longer time period is the better honestly. You won't get as much from the shorter offering but you will still enjoy it. Just be aware of fomo.

All I can say is wow. Maurice is the most humble, knowledgeable, kind, and sincere man I've met in a long time. Not only did we learn the fundamentals of growing our own food here in Georgia, but we actually got to harvest some from his personal garden AND we planted spring onions for other people for the next experience he hosts. Each time that he does this, I'm totally there. Simply put, magical. The perfect experience for couples, parents and children, or by yourself.

We enjoyed our experience. You will be able to see what healthy plants, crops, and soil looks like. I really enjoyed seeing the exotic plants, smelling the herbs, eating the antioxidants and digging in the soil to learn the layers of compost. The host was very knowledgeable on everything! You will leave here knowing how to plant for our earth and yourself.

Wonderful experience with Maurice. Very attentive and was able to assess my level of knowledge with the subject and tailor the experience for me. I really appreciated his willingness to answer specific questions and his excitement on the subject. I feel like the experience was more than a lesson, I made a friend :)
