What you'll do

Active crabbing (or chicken necking), while seasonal, is an all weather activity. It is suitable for all ages offering excitement and relaxation. Depending on the tide schedule, I will have all needed equipment prepared on site. Crabbing requires up to several hours in the sun. Guests will be advised what to bring and not in advance.
First task is getting to know the equipment and laws regarding the activity. I maintain a current license as a saltwater fisherman by DNR.
Next, it's time to bait the traps. A bit challenging, it starts the excitement.
Third, we will select prime locations for our lines while observing the movements of the currents.
Then we periodically check the lines for crabs using various strategies. Some are soakers, some are pullers; it just takes one second to get a blue on the bite!
When you've got one, you alert the your net man for assistance . It's more fun than shouting BINGO in the church hall! Once the crab is netted, time to learn. Is is male or female? Soft or hard, where is it in the molting phase? Barnacles? Roe? Legal size?
We will pursue our catch until the tide turns.
At the end, catch is packaged for guest to take or release.
Other things to note
There is an opportunity to get your hands dirty here, but you don't have too. These critters can be intimidating, but trust my expertise. Once crabbing is in your blood, you can't get enough.

I am a Charleston native with pluff mud blood and a saltwater soul. Raised on the tidal creeks and marshes of the southern shore, I am a 5th generation crabber. Every shrimper, crabber and fisherman on the dock is quick to show you their catch, give you a tip or teach you a knot. It's the costal code.
There is no joy like teaching someone, even a passerby pull to their first line or umbrella their first net.
Chicken necking is a proud tradition; let me share it with you. I know all the best spots by heart and my gear is always ready. Plus, a good catch will provide crab boil dinner!

Where you'll be

A successful necker has to go with the flow, literally. Every season has hot spots. Commercial crabbers on the rivers say the crabs are still in the deeper inlets, keeping us mostly at the Pitt Street Bridge or Folly Creek. As the warmer water comes in, the best crabbing with be in the Wappoo Cut. I've a secret spot on the Charleston harbor, backside of James Island too that never disappoints.
Even if the crabs are shy, the view is breathtaking

Anna showed me how to catch blue crabs for dinner with an obvious love of the craft and great knowledge that came to her from growing up on James Island as a fifth-generation Charlestonian. She's energetic, fun, inquisitive and interesting. She tells great stories. One of the best things about her is her scrupulous observance of DNR rules. Any crabs we caught that were under 5 inches wide had to be thrown back. She used her grandfather's ruler to measure them. The best part is I came home with seven nice-sized crabs.

Our family w 2 boys 11, 15 had so much fun crabbing w Anna. Our first day in Charleston we walked all around the historic downtown, so staying in one spot for 4 hours on the next day was relaxing and fun. And tasty! We were able to net many large crabs that we boiled later at our rental. My kids tried several different methods that Anna taught us. Anna was outgoing and easy to understand. My kids really enjoyed it. Afterwards we were able to continue on to Folly Beach for a swim —really beautiful. Just remember to bring hand sanitizer and paper towels!

We didn’t really know what to expect, but this excursion was perfect for my 17 year old son and me. All ages would enjoy, but sometimes teens are especially difficult to impress. Anna’s passion for crabbing and love of nature is contagious. She was also generous with her local knowledge and gave us great recommendations for where to eat and what to do while visiting. Since we didn’t have a cooler, Anna offered to box up our catch with ice so we could have crab for dinner! She even dropped them off to us on her way back through Charleston. Highly recommend!

Anna was great. The weather was a bit chilly but it was a fun experience and she was very knowledgeable. Would love to do it when weather is warmer and crabs are around. Had all ages (3-76)
