What you'll do

You've probably seen Mt.Fuji and Geishas, tried Sushi or even experienced Japanese Calligraphy. Let's explore a little deeper and I'll introduce you to the traditional Japanese painting material: the authentic Clay Paint. In this fun, hands-on workshop you will: 1. be introduced to the traditional clay paint as well as other materials such as: Washi(Japanese paper), Sumi(Japanese ink), Nikawa(gelatin for medium) and some painting tools. 2. have a rare opportunity of mixing paint by yourself!. We will go through a step-by -step process from grinding pigment and adding gelatin to do some demonstration on Washi paper. 3. be given a piece of Washi paper and create your own masterpiece with clay paints that you mixed. I will offer 3 different levels depend on your experience and skills: A. abstruct: drip, let it bleed. Enjoy organic shapes in any unpredictable way. B. stencils: want to paint but not confident? Stencils will help you then! C. traditional patterns: Patience and concentration. Nerve wrecking but rewarding. Clay paint has been used in Japan for over a thousand years. Primitive yet sophisticated, you will enjoy this mat texture if you appreciate the nature.

Shinji

While working as a display designer in New York (lived there for 11 years), I began art for self expression with acrylics and color pencils, you know, just ordinary materials. When I moved back to Japan, everything felt so exotic that I fell in love with my own country; I quickly shifted my style to All-Japanese by using traditional materials (Mud paints, Sumi ink, Washi paper) with a full of inspiration from folklore, local festivals, handicrafts and textile patterns. I actively participate art fairs and shows worldwide. My works have been exhibited in Osaka, Tokyo, Paris and Munich.
