What you'll do

I will meet you at the entrance to Bantham beach car park where you can enjoy the sandy beach before/after the walk. From there, we will travel in my car to the start of the walk (the end of Aveton Gifford tidal road). After ensuring you have the correct footwear (bare feet are not permissible), we'll set off at low tide into the middle of the estuary, criss-crossing the river until we reach the slipway leading back up to the entrance to Bantham beach (about 2.5 miles downstream) where we met. We will walk across both soft and firm terrain, often uneven, with muddy patches mostly at the beginning and end. Please note that our periodic wading will normally be to about knee height but, as tides vary in their height daily, be prepared that it may be deeper. At about the halfway point, you can clamber up the side of a lime kiln, which gives you a stunning, panoramic view of the wide river valley. During the walk, you will be in a large landscape with few people. The estuary environment is a special one, so I expect this will be a walk like no other you will have done! Please ensure you are fit enough to complete the distance across the varying terrain explained above.

I have been living and walking around Aveton Gifford since 2000. The Avon river estuary is part of the lifeblood of this village and I have been exploring it at low tide on foot and at high tide by kayak for many years. It is one of my favourite places, which I would love to share with guests.

Where you'll be

Our walk takes us down the meandering, steep-sided river valley of the Avon estuary, ending at the entrance to the popular, sandy Bantham beach. It is a little-visited area and accessible on foot only at low tide. You will find yourself with a wide vista and the possibility of passing the local swans, who may fly low along the valley with their beating wings a sound that you will remember.
