What you'll do

Capture lunar images with an astrophotographer

Welcome to Shoot the Moon!! You are going to have an amazing time with high-end telescopes and tracking mounts... you will come home with great photographs and videos of the moon, like flying over the surface showing craters and mountain ridges... make sure to bring your camera! Even with a simple iPhone or Android, you will be blown away by the detail you can see. Join me for cocktails and light appetizers at my studio on Ocean Avenue located in the charming and bustling beach town of Santa Monica. I'll teach you the tips and tricks of astrophotography and then we'll head outside to capture the magic. Crescent, half, or full, the moon is always a fascinating subject to shoot. During full moon, you will not see as many craters since the sunlight hits it frontally, so the lighting is more flat. Every phase has its unique characteristics. Use your own camera or quality smart phone in combination with my high-end equipment to shoot your very own high-resolution photos of our closest neighbor in space!

I took my first photographs of moon and planets many years ago at age 15 - using a small telescope, shooting on film from my home in Amsterdam, Holland. Now, in the digital age, it has become far easier: it is amazing how much detail you can capture with your DSLR or iPhone.

My astrophotography has been published and exhibited internationally.

If you are interested in astronomy book Martin!! He greets you with drinks and appetizers at his studio. Then, walks you through his journey of astronomy and photography followed by planet gazing with 3 different telescopes! I so much enjoyed talking with him about stars, galaxies and all the other things..

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve taken. Martin is an exceptional & patient teacher. Even before enrolling in the experience he & I had a dialogue about the best dates to see the moon. We decided this past Sunday because it was half-moon & the planets could be seen clearly. In addition, he kept me updated on the weather so we could anticipate the sky conditions. Amazingly, the ⭐️ aligned to provide the best condition for amazing Astrophotos. Martin taught me about his powerful telescopes & lunar landmarks so I could get used to the moon’s landscape. He has a special eye piece that can accommodate an iPhone & we were able to capture many many amazing photos with my iPhone 6S. Only planets (vs galaxies, nebulas, etc) are visualized within LA because of light pollution. But the photos that we did capture of the moon, Saturn & Jupiter were fantastic. I had no knowledge about the skies before this experience, but I’ll definitely pay closer attention to the moon & the stars from now on. Don’t hesitate! Sign up for this experience! You won’t regret it.

Unfortunately it was June gloom the evening our experience was booked and we were unable to see the moon which also means we were unable to take pictures (which was out of anyone's control). But Martin showed us his telescopes and he shared pieces of his work, gave us advice and emailed us resources for astrophotography and advice for viewing the upcoming solar eclipse. Even though we did not get a chance to take photos of the moon, we left with valuable information.

Martin is very professional photographer. Although we were not able to shoot the moon due to the weather condition. I learned a lot from Martin. Exceptional experience!

I had a luminous experience with Martin and my fellow stargazers at Shoot the Moon. Martin is an excellent host who is generous with his time, knowledge and expertise in the area of Astrophotography. He made us feel at home in his artist’s studio filled with examples of his photography work from a variety of subjects including some spectacular photos of nebulae from across the universe. My favorite part of the experience was being able to utilize Martin’s high-end telescopes and lenses and adaptors to view the Moon with stunning clarity - like I was looking through a portal window as a passenger on an Apollo mission. I left with some amazing photographs and memories as well as encouragement from Marton that I can continue to learn and enjoy the art of Astrophotography as a lifelong hobby. Highly recommend.
