What you'll do
Now the fun begins! Please bring a smile and positive vibes! We're going to transform an ordinary piece of pine wood into something beautiful and useful using a technique called 'shou sugi ban' which is the ancient Japanese art of preserving wood with fire. You'll have a choice of making a candle/condiment holder, a food platter or a piece of wall art. Whether your practical or artistic you will make a piece to treasure. First, we'll shape the wood by sawing, sanding and drilling using hand tools. Use your imagination, anything is possible! Next we will char the wood using a small gas burner and observe the amazing transformation this technique brings. Now to add some texture. We do this by scraping away the charred soft part of the wood which elevates the harder part resulting in a complete change from the original material. More you scrape the deeper the texture. It's not hard to do but does require some elbow grease. Finally, to decorate your piece using a range of water based varnishes and/or tints in a range of colours. See photos. Whilst waiting for the piece to dry we can clean up, take some refreshment and have a laugh!
Hi everyone I'm Spencer host of this 'shou sugi ban' workshop where your learn the ancient Japanese art of preserving wood with fire. Since I first started working in antique restoration 30 years ago I've had a deep passion for all things arts and crafts and designing and making has become a way of life for me. That path led me to open my studio here in Barcelona where I now design and make unique tables. My style is eclectic and I like to use recycled and sustainable materials including wood, metal and glass. I'm influenced by my many travels and love to learn from different cultures.
Gloves, apron, sandpaper, drill, wire brush, varnishes, tints.
