What you'll do
Eastern Lisbon used to be an ugly industrial area until it was chosen as the site to host the last world fair of the 20th century, Expo 98. Since then it has reborn into a futuristic glass-and-steel district, home to some wonderful examples of modern architecture. One of them is Oriente Station, a landmark with the signature of Santiago Calatrava, while Pritzker-award winning architect Alvaro Siza Vieira is the man behind the fantastic Pavilhão de Portugal, known for its remarkable undulating roof. Many of the other constructions have an ocean theme (the twin towers São Gabriel and São Rafael resemble ships and are named after two of Vasco da Gama's vessels), and there is also one of the world's most spectacular aquariums nearby. Everywhere you turn, there is a glimpse of the river looking like an ocean (crossed by Europe's longest bridge), water volcanos erupting, wave-shaped benches, exotic greenery and public art by Portuguese and international artists. The famous cable-car overlooks it all, this unashamedly avant-garde side of Lisbon that contrasts with its old historic center.
Joana & Gonçalo
Hi! I'm Joana and you may find me or my best friend Gonçalo hosting this tour! Even though he studied biology and I studied communication, we were both born and raised in the center of Lisbon. Since then an enourmous passion for Lisbon has grown inside us and with that, the will to share it. Together we found a way to take you for a tour to the past seated on the future. Sitways! An eco-friendly vehicle that is basically a segway, but seated. How cool is that? I can assure you that you'll have a rich and unique experience, while having fun comfortably seated! Check our profile to know all the locations where you can ride with us. :)
Sitway (sit-segway) and helmet.
