The first step is to understand the basic knowledge on Japanese writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana syllabary and Kanji (Chinese character). After a brief lecture/demonstration, you can decide what you like to write for your own keepsake. You can pick from the Hiragana syllabary for the pronunciation of your name, or the Kanji characters which is your favorite words or have a nice meaning etc. You can use all tools (brushes, ink, paper) at this workshop. Now it is your challenge time. You can practice writing and writing until you write your dream characters. I am happy to help you during the lesson providing tips.
Finally you write your best calligraphic image on a Japanese paper card board.
As an option, you can buy a traditional Japanese-style fancy scroll or wall hanging where the card board can be put in nicely, to take to away as a souvenior.

Why don't you try Japanese Calligraphy, while sightseeing in the Tsukiji Outer Market and visiting the Tsukiji Honganji Temple or shopping in Ginza?
The lesson takes just 120 minutes after the lunch or before the dinner.
It is held in my companies' office where I work as an editor. The building is located opposite the Tsukiji Outer Market.
I have a teaching instructor certificate in Japanese calligraphy as a Grand Master in the Shoseikai School, which is a nationally recognized organization in Japan. My calligraphy works have been accepted in several exhibitions and have received awards.
I studied Journalism as a graduate student in the USA. Through the experience, I really felt I would like people from around the world to learn more about Japanese culture.

The Calligraphy workshop with Keiko was a lot of fun, and very well structured. First, we learned about the Japanese language and then we moved to the hands-on session. Keiko is super attentive and professional. we practiced and received Keiko’s comments until we were satisfied with our work. I would definitely recommend this activity to whoever visits Japan, it is a great way to get a fun and interactive introduction to Japanese language, history and rich culture.

If you have more than a few days in Japan, this calligraphy class is a great way to actively participate in Japanese culture. The location is very close to Tsukiji outer market and works out perfectly with a visit to Tsukiji. Keiko was a friendly and knowledgeable host that really helped immerse us in the art. The experience is broken up into history, basic tools, basic strokes, learning to write your name, then learning to write one Japanese character. You finish off the class by creating a piece of calligraphy art on shikishi that you can take home. The class was very immersive and time flew by very quickly. Since the class is small and intimate, there will be lots of fun as you learn to work with the tools to create beautiful calligraphy strokes. One of the best parts is being able to have a piece of art home with you.

Keiko San is a super friendly, patient and experienced teacher. She showed me how to write my name in katakana and taught us the different brush strokes and techniques. She let us choose a special character in kanji and made us practice our word until we are comfortable writing it on a really nice board we got to take home as souvenir. This class was very relaxed and she makes everyone feel comfortable. I highly recommend this course. This was truly unforgettable and I hope to join again in the future.

Thank you for the lesson! It was really enriching and interesting. At the beginning we were not sure that we are able to do these hieroglyphs, because they were looking for us like difficult paintings. The lesson was brilliantly held by Keiko, an expert and careful teacher, above all very patient :-). At the end we could even write our names and one hieroglyph meaning something important for us. I chose hieroglyph meaning “flying”, my wife chose one meaning “air”. Our pics are not perfect, but they are beautiful and we’ll keep them as a good memory about our trip in Japan)) This quick lesson, in an hospitable and clean location, it’s a small entry gate to understand more Japanese philosophy and culture, to see roots of Japanese perfectionism and meditative approach for everything. And also now all these hieroglyphs everywhere in Japan are not looking so meaningless and non understandable to us as before)))
