What you'll do
Starting and passing through the colorful streets of La Candelaria, you will be led to Nuestra Señora de Egipto, the church located at the entrance of Barrio Egipto. Through Calle Real or Royal Street, once the people’s only connection to the city, will lead you deeper into the neighborhood. We will then stop with you at El Cuadrado, a central point in the history of gang fights of the area. While in the past this place was a strategic point for control over the territory for the gangs, today it is painted with pictures that tell you about the history and new values of the people. Walking uphill through the colorful streets of the neighborhood, you will notice first-hand how much the area has changed and transformed into a place of hope, peace, and culture. All along the way, you will be able to see the history of the people illustrated in impressive graffiti art. You will then reach the hills where the modest houses of the locals and their families are bedded into the steep hills. You will note that the community still struggles with access to basic utilities. In spite of these conditions, this place is full of life thanks to the people’s warmth, joy, and strong drive.
I've lived at Barrio Egipto my entire life suffering from its gang-related problems for many years. But as a former gang member myself, tired of so much suffering, death, and delinquency I chose to transform my neighborhood through tourism, putting an end to conflicts, teaching the young ones a different approach to life, and showing travelers not only the harsh history we've lived but the beautiful and inspiring side of our community.
Snack: You'll taste delicious arepas (flatbread) with cheese.
You can choose between a coffee prepared in the traditional way or Chicha ( a fermented drink made out of corn )
Where you'll be
You will visit Barrio Egipto, one of Bogotá's first neighborhoods. Though this place has had a harsh history of gang-related conflicts, the community is working hard on changing the violent stigma showing beautiful graffiti artwork, narrating its own history, and welcoming visitors with warmth.
