What you'll do

Participants will meet me and my partner, Andi, at Parque de La Alameda. When you arrive to the park, walk to the famous waterfront, El Malecon, and look for the large yellow "CUBA" sign. From here, we will frequent a local farmer's market to purchase organic produce for our meal. We will then head to the predominantly AfroCuban neighborhood of Reparto Nuevo Viste Alegre where we will meet our hosts and lovely family matriarchs-our grandmother, Abuela, and her sister, Tia. After an invigorating shot of Tia's infamous Cafe Cubano, we will help to prepare the home-cooked meal. As we work, you will learn about the African and Indigenous roots of many Cuban cuisine staples like platanos, tamales, and Moros y Cristianos (aka congri). Tia and Abuela are pillars of the community so neighbors, friends, and family are always stopping by to say hello, use the telephone, and/or have some coffee. You are guaranteed to make lots of new Cuban friends! After enjoying our meal under the Cuban sky (weather permitting) we will return to Parque de la Alameda where we will have a cerveza bien fria from the hosts' favorite local beer stand and make a toast to new friends and unforgettable memories

Where you'll be

We will frequent a market where we will shop like a local to gather fresh, organic produce for our meal. We will then frequent the AfroCuban neighborhood of Viste Alegre which is an off-the-beaten-path tourist destination. While there, participants will help to prepare a home-cooked meal with my family elders whose inightful conversation cannot be found in a book or online. The beer stand we will visit is a local hangout for Cubans near and far.
