What you'll do

Let me show you around my neighborhood! We will walk and talk through Kallio, a neighborhood with a plethora of quirky bars, street art, and stunning examples of 20th-century Finnish architecture. Once a working-class neighborhood, Kallio has transformed into a home for students, young professionals, and the elderly pensioners. Kallio has a lot to offer and I want to help you experience a side of Helsinki many tourists do not get to see. Get off the beaten path and explore the cheapest bars in Helsinki (some are under €4 for a pint!), a D.I.Y. skatepark with the city’s best street art, Helsinki’s oldest sauna and its iconic neon sign, and much more. I am also happy to take photos and send them to you by email or text immediately after the tour's completion. We will start and finish the tour at the Hakaniemi metro station Exit C right near the Hakaniemi market.

Learn more about Matthew

Matthew

I am a Finnish-American and moved to Helsinki in January of 2019. Growing up, I always dreamed of living in Finland and when teachers would ask me what I wanted to do when I was older, I would reply, "Live in Finland." Now, after years of reading about Finnish culture and history, I am living my dream in Helsinki. Since I have moved to Helsinki, I have biked over 3000 km delivering food around the center of the city, particularly in Kallio. I am also completing "intti" or mandatory military service. Since I am in the Finnish army until June 18 of 2020, I am only available for tours on the weekends.

Where you'll be

We will tour Kallio, a historical working-class district in Helsinki that has strong ties to every period of Finnish history. In Finnish, Kallio means "the rock" which will be evident as we walk this cragged landscape, exploring its bohemian streets like Helsinginkatu and Vaasankatu, the iconic Karhupuisto, and the towering Kallion Kirkko (Kallio Church). Escape the crowds (except on market Sundays!) and learn about a different side of Helsinki.

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be cancelled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 4 guests ages 18 and up can attend. Parents may also bring children under 2 years of age. All you need is a good attitude and good shoes! If you have no or limited knowledge of Finland, Helsinki, or Kallio, not a problem at all! That's what I'm…

More tips

While you might be apprehensive about how recently I have moved to Finland and the fact that I am not a native Finn, I have an unparalleled passion for this city and country, and I want to share that. Additionally, my time in the army is the best cultural immersion plan offered.
