What you'll do
You'll meet Gains or Chris outside the Caledonian Hotel (Waldorf Astoria) entrance, and from there it's a short walk down to Dean Village. In Dean Village, you'll see historic buildings from the 17th Century, Edinburgh's only river, a variety of wildlife and you may even want to take a picture or two. In fact you'll get a taste of Scotland's glorious countryside after only a ten minute walk from Princes Street! From Dean Village, you'll walk down the Water of Leith, and see Dean Bridge, a magnificent feat of early nineteenth-century engineering as well as an eighteenth century spa. After that, you'll see the artistic community of Stockbridge and parts of Edinburgh's Historic New Town. To conclude we'll walk through Princes Street Gardens, a magnificent scenic area with tremendous views of Edinburgh Castle, hear the varied past of this park and the story of a very brave bear who served in World War Two! In short you'll spend this tour away from the often crowded tourist centres of the Old Town and see areas with a lot of history and breathtaking scenery that are very much off the beaten track.
Chris And Gains
Hi, I'm Chris! I'm a local guide in Edinburgh. I've been guiding for 7 years now and I still love nothing more than meeting nice people and showing them my city. Together with my colleague, Gains, we are looking forward to showing you around one of Edinburgh's best kept secrets. Gains has a PhD in Scottish History and Chris actually lives in Dean Village. We have made a tour that combines the best of local history and anecdotes, giving you a great insight into what life in one of Edinburgh's hidden gems is really like. We run the tour at this time partly because it's quiet but also because sometimes you see local wildlife that you wouldn't during the day. This tour is perfect for anyone wanting to escape other tourist
