What you'll do

We will start the workshop by familiarising ourselves with the tools needed and the basic techniques of brush lettering/modern calligraphy. Then we will go into practising forming letters, with an emphasis on lowercase alphabets. This will be followed by writing some Singlish ('Singapore English') words and short phrases - a fun way to pick up some local lingo that you will definitely hear the moment you disembark from your plane at our airport! Lastly, you will produce your very own art piece. You can work from scratch on a blank piece of art paper or choose from one of my pre-prepared watercolour backgrounds. Bring your artwork home in a vintage photoframe or a plastic sleeve. The whole process will be very hands-on but guided at the same time. A small group size means plenty of guidance. We will also enjoy Singaporean snacks and drinks together. I hope to provide a truly local and satisfying experience for you as you pick up a new skill! I speak English, Chinese, and some Thai.

Learn more about Sheryl

Sheryl

I picked up the skill of modern calligraphy in early 2017 and it was a dream come true to produce beautiful letters by hand because I had loved typography from a young age. Although it has only been about 2 years, I have gained refined skill because of regular experimenting and practice. I’m proud to say that I’m mainly self-taught and have delivered various commissioned art to individual and corporate clients. They always bring joy to the receiver and satisfaction to me. My classes are interesting because of unique teaching methods and storytelling. There’s always a story behind art! You can find me at www.instagram.com/oakeydokes

Where you'll be

We will be having the workshop in my airy and naturally-lighted home located at northeastern Singapore. More than 80% of Singaporeans stay in public housing like mine (affectionately known as 'HDB flats') but foreigners seldom get to visit one. Making art in a truly local setting such as this is an opportunity you won't want to miss!
