Gig Harbor, United States

What you'll do

From the happy moment you board HOBBES, to the sad time you have to step off her, you will be immersed in the Sailing life! Frank and his mate Karen are anxious for you to feel at home onboard HOBBES. You may participate, or not, as you are comfortable. Relax and enjoy the cruise, or help with sailing (weather permitting); Your choice. We both will provide step by step instructions for you so that you will become comfortable on the water. As HOBBES is a very large boat, for first timers, it can be a bit intimidating. We will provide overall instruction about the art of sailing, show you how to handle lines to rig the sails, show you how to steer appropriately according to the wind, and guide you in handling the sail sheets to properly adjust them. We will adjust our instruction to your experience level. Depending on the tides on that particular day, we may head several different ways out of the harbor. Each direction has its own challenges from varied wind to rushing currents. Frank & Karen will guide you constantly with detailed instruction so you can make it look easy to sail the 16 ton craft according to your whims. After 2 hours of honing your skills at tacking, beating, reaching, and other points of sail, we will re-enter Gig Harbor. You can even help moor Hobbes when we glide into the dock after your cruise! Don't miss your chance to cruise HOBBES!

Where you'll be

If you have time to see the sights while sailing, there are a number of views only accessible from the water. Waterfront homes on stilts enjoy a 200 foot stairway for access. The Narrows is home of some of the best fishing in the northwest due to the deep water and rushing currents. Point Defiance Park provides a sanctuary for wildlife including Bald Eagles. Seals, Whales, and even Orcas may visit close aboard during your sail...you never know.

Frank and Karen really care for their community and it shows. They’re knowledgeable and are well versed in the history of Gig Harbor. Their boat is gorgeous and the sail was perfect. We saw seals and dolphins while under sail and had a wonderful time talking with them. 10/10 would recommend!

I highly recommend this experience, Frank and Karen are very knowledgeable and easy to talk to for those interested in learning about sailing. For leisure, you’ll have a drink and a comfortable seat as you glide along the pristine waters in Gig Harbor. On my trip, we saw a silver salmon run and dolphins.

Highly recommend!! Our family of 4 cruised on the Hobbes on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Frank and Karen were very inviting and great hosts on our tour. We saw a few seals and the Mountain was out! My daughter mentioned she didn’t want it to end!

It was a relaxing and learning experience, was able to hold the pause button out of this busy life on the water. Thanks Karen and Frank that was awesome. Hope to see you again before summer ends.
