What you'll do

In this experience I welcome you to my home to hygge. "Hygge" means relax at home, talk about whatever subject comes to mind, drink coffee and not stress about anything. To begin with, we'll go for a short stroll in my little village. We'll stop by the village pond, and I will tell you a bit about village life now and then. Returning to my house, we shall have a cup of coffee and eat some buns or cake, relax, chat and - if you bring along kids - play indoors or in the garden, depending on the weather. Basically, we will just hygge at home. Being a rather average Dane, I can tell you about the Danish society, values and ways of life. Any questions are welcomed about my everyday life as a working mother of two small children. If you are up for it, I'd like to teach you some common Danish words and phrases. Also, I'd like to tell you a little about our famous Danish writers Karen Blixen and H.C. Andersen and give you some reading samples to take home. All in a relaxed and informal atmosphere in cosy settings.

Malene

I am a rather average Dane, with job and core family. I have a master's degree in Danish studies from the University of Copenhagen. I teach teenagers and young adults in the Danish school system. I am hospitable and knowledgeable. I understand that people of different ages and different cultural backgrounds may have different preferences, and I adjust to that.

What's included

Food
Cake or buns and coffee or tea. Children can have milk or water. Let me know if you are on a special diet, e.g. vegan.

Where you'll be

I welcome you to my home, in the small and very Danish village of Højby, just at the outskirts of Lejre. My house used to be the blacksmith's house from 1870, but it is now modernised to suit my family of four. To begin with, we will go for a short stroll in the village. When we return, we will stay at my home - indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather.

Guest safety

Outdoor activities carry risks, and you may be exposed to dangerous situations as part of this experience. Make sure you can participate safely given your abilities and the conditions (such as location, weather, and equipment).

More tips

The main experience here is Danish hygge. I'll show you my home and my village, and you can ask any questions about everyday life in Denmark. With my background, I will be happy to teach you a bit about Danish language or literature, but only as much as you feel up for.
