This is a curated crash course on Philippine Colonial Architecture. Learn about how Neo-classicism, Art Deco and Art Nouveau became colonial branding in Philippine History.

Bring a good camera and some good walking shoes because Manila streets can also be a good subject for artistic photos.

We will meet at the staircase of the Manila Post office and walk towards Escolta. Tour will end at the Regina building where we could get some food and refreshments.

I am a full time art history professor in a university in Manila with a masters degree in art studies, a part time traveler and a daydreamer in between.

I have been hosting travelers in my home and DIY art related events to locals and foreigners. I am passionate about sharing my culture through non-mainstream tourism: street food, market visits, jeepney and LRT rides, independent movies and of course, museum and gallery visits.

Where you'll be

Escolta used to be the main business district in Manila. Together with other colonial structures built in Manila City, the architectural styles tell us stories of power, survival from wars and gentrification when we were considered as the Pearl of the Orient.

Fast forward to 2019, the city heritage struggles and thrives through the challenges of commercialism and the charm of an old soul.

Angel’s tour of the old neighborhoods and historical architecture in central Manila was really fantastic! We had a great, small group of enthusiastic participants - many of whom were into photography like myself. I feel like I really learned a lot and got some insights that I wouldn’t have been able to get on my own. We even visited a small coffee shop in an art-collective, and sampled some local street food and the rooftop bar sunset was incredible! Many thanks to Angel and I highly recommend this experience.

Let's face it, as a foreigner you would not veer off alone in these parts of Manila. The route to these locales are overwhelming to say the least and intimidating for even the locals to take. It's safe given the time and the person you are with. That is just the way it goes in these parts of the world. Better off taking the experience and rolling with other tourists. Excellent street photography opportunities along the routes. I was born and raised in Manila and still learned so much from going on this tour. Be adventurous, live life, share your blessings.

We had quite an adventure together! I was grateful for having her personal perspective which made it such a unique experience. Would never have ventured to spots she took me to on my own; I felt like I really had a glimpse into local, everyday life (with a splash of tourist indulgence). Neither rain nor broken down tricycles could ruin our day! :)
