What you'll do

We will open the doors of our workshop and show you what it means to prepare an authentic homemade ice cream faithfully following an 1840 recipe.

During this experience you will find out why (unlike what you think) it is really difficult to taste a real homemade gelato.

We will travel around the world staying in our laboratory:
We will start from Madagascar to discover what scent the Red Bourboun Vanilla we use for our "Crema del Re", the gelato (not ice cream) which the Bourbon King of Naples was fond and which we keep the recipe in our family for over 120!

We will return to Italy from North to South. To the north in the Langhe to discover the aromas of Trilobata Tonda Gentile PGI Hazelnut and then head south to the slopes of Etna to discover the true Green Pistachio of Bronte DOP.

We'll be leaving soon, heading for Iran to discover the color and intensity of Iranian Saffron in Pistils and then diverting Africa, South America and Asia, along the road to chocolate, to discover the aromas and scents that cocoa beans emanate.

In short, a UNIQUE experience from different points of view: the historical-cultural one in primis and then the gastronomic one.

We make ice cream by faithfully respecting a recipe that shows the DATE 1840. Think that, the same recipe, was served in the form of Cremolada to the King of Naples.
We are the UNIQUE in Puglia in making the gelato with the traditional method, Slow, NO TRICKS and WITHOUT the use of industrial pasta and ingredients of the same kind.

Where you'll be

The Mokambo experience will be carried out in the Mokambo Gelateria open workshop. Guests can move to the various areas of the workshop to observe, smell and touch the ingredients that make up the "Gelato d'Altri Tempi". They can then move to the tasting area in order to enjoy all the ingredients previously studied in the form of ice cream.

We had a great time with Vincenzo, Giuliana and their uncle. We were slightly late due to transportation and they were very accommodating, we did not miss any of the experience. We got to learn about both the history of their family and the history of gelato. We were able to make gelato with their expert guidance from start to finish and had a lot of fun doing so. And then we got to taste all of their flavours of gelato. They were better than either of us imagined. We did not think it would be so much better than the other gelato we tried, but it was! All in all, we had a great evening, made some gelato in the authentic way and made some friends in the process. Would definitely recommend!

Experience full of tastes. The Mokambo family (how they call themselves) is an beautiful example of hospitality and passion for artisan method and flavors of Italian gelato. They share their expertise and family heritage with guests. And me with my husband were very happy to join them on their journey to perfect gelato. Many thanks for this amazing experience, that we could only imagine. Thanks and hugs to uncle and Giuliana for being patient teachers. Special thanks to Vincenzo for a gastronomic tour around beautiful town of Ruvo di Puglia. P.S. no spoilers on the process, just go and see it yourself. You’ll be amazed.

The experience was really exciting. We were very much involved in the process of making gelato. The atmosphere was very friendly and hostile. We learned a lot about the history of Mokambo and met new friends. After all I can say that this is for sure the best gelato I have ever tasted. Highly recomended. Спасибо большое! We visited yesterday. In our opinion it is a MUST-DO experience if you want a taste of the ‘real’ Italy (in more ways than one!) The family (Vincenzo, Guiliana and Zio Franco) were all so friendly and hugely knowledgable about gelato - and all 4 of us had the chance to get involved with making the gelato using the traditional method their family had used over the last couple of centuries. We went with our 2 daughters aged 9 and 11 who loved the experience as much as us. You leave feeling like you’ve learnt lots, been fully immersed in a proper Italian experience, and with a belly full of the most AMAZING gelato you’ve ever tasted. Highly recommended - 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟

After already appreciating the high quality of the ice cream and wonderful customer experience with Giuliana several times, I finally got the pleasure and satisfaction of experiencing how REAL artisanal Italian gelato is made by the people of Mokambo, using only the best ingredients, ancient recipe knowledge and wonderful passion from its creators. Not only did I get to learn about the process of gelato-making, I really got to know the love and devotion this family has for their tradition. From the perseverance of searching for sourcing the best ingredients worldwide and nationally, to the tiny beautiful details such as tasting the ice cream flavours using silver spoons, the result is a truly unique and special experience. Highly recommend to anyone to take a detour via Ruvo di Puglia and Mokambo Gelateria for this treasure!
