What you'll do

The Roman neighborhood known as “Trastevere” refers, literally, to the area “across the Tiber.” In ancient times, this was the district where Jews and freed slaves lived. Trastevere is one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of the city, rich in history, legends, and underground spaces. We will start our journey by discovering the hidden gems of Trastevere. Our visit will take us to several unusual underground churches, and will wind through the city’s ancient alleyways. We will then cross the river to the Tiber Island where, believe it or not, an order of monks maintain to this day, beneath their monastery, an ancient underground cemetery where we will see the preserved remains of many dozens of skeletons (If this site is unavailable, we will visit the undergrounds of San Nicola).

Learn more about Marco

Marco

I am Marco, a speleo-archaeologist who has been studying the aqueducts of Rome for over 20 years. I have two organizations that collaborate with the Italian archaeological superintendency and I am rather well known in Italy. In fact, the National Geographic Society put us on the cover of its July 2006 issue and discussed our activities. We want to offer this experience to make the history of Rome known from another perspective, namely the non-touristic aspect of the city, which is unavailable to tourists brought by tour operators.

About the organisation

Sotterranei di Roma

Sotterranei di Roma is intended to safeguard and highlight our underground archaeological heritage. Accordingly, our activity includes both the recovering archaeological sites and promoting them through study and publications, both scientific and popular. By participating in this experience, you too can contribute to these activities by supporting us in our business.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Sotterranei di Roma.

Where you'll be

We will visit the heart of Rome, Trastevere. We will visit churches, ancient alleyways, and forgotten corners of the historic city. Then we will cross the Tiber on one of the oldest bridges in Rome to arrive at an underground cemetery on the Tiber Island (If this site is unavailable, we will visit the undergrounds of San Nicola). In ancient times, this island was made to resemble a ship. We will visit these nautical-themed remnants.
