What you'll do

Your one-hour history walking tour starts by learning of the very beginnings of Greyfriars. As we walk through the the kirkyard you will meet George who died in the early 1600’s. Why do we still talk about him today? I'll not only show you his magnificent mausoleum but where he earned his nickname! We visit the mausoleum of one of the finest architectural dynasties in the history of Scotland. A fantastic advert for the family business you’ll discover! I’ll also show you where the man who greeted William of Orange on the beach at Torbay lies at rest and tell you his story. You will also hear the full story of Greyfriars Bobby. If there are Harry Potter fans in your tour, I will also show you exactly where the real people who inspired many of the characters in the books and movies can be found. I'll tell you of the real life of one of them and of the meaning of auld Scots words using the stone of another! Please Note: The route we will navigate is neither flat or level. Wear strong footwear.

Learn more about Fraser

Fraser

I am a highly experienced Edinburgh tour guide, in my spare time, I explore Scottish history. The information I finds enables me to unveil much more fascinating detail about the past of the city. When added to the key facts, this helps bring to life the vibrant dangerous times of the past of Edinburgh. I also have lots of professional experience in researching peoples links to Scotland and have traced peoples Jacobite and Covenanter ancestors for them. I have written lots of articles that have been published by several high profile websites and physical magazines.

Where you'll be

Greyfriars kirkyard contains thousands of bodies and hundreds of headstones. Many show very little information. It took me many months to locate those with the most fascinating stories and map your tour in a way that best provides you with fascinating tale of Scottish social history in the best way. I own an antique book, Silences That Speak. It contains over 350 pages on Greyfriars kirkyard, even translating Latin inscriptions into English!
