What you'll do

In this 3-hour walking tour, you will learn about the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish communities in Bucharest, spectacular abandoned and restored synagogues, persecutions of Jews during the Holocaust and Communism, prominent Jewish architects, artists and doctors, and their tremendous contributions to Bucharest's culture and economy. This tour is relevant for non-Jewish travelers, as well, as it goes off-the-beaten-path to explore Romania's recent history and how its citizens come to terms with it. We will explore together: > The former Jewish neighborhood of Bucharest > Neoclassical buildings designed by Jewish architect Leonida Negrescu > Bauhaus & Art-Deco buildings designed by Jewish architects Jean Monda and Marcel Iancu > The abandoned Beth Hamidrash synagogue > The astonishing, recently restored Choral Temple > The recently restored Holy Union Synagogue, nowadays a Museum of Jewish Life. > The Jewish State Theater > The Jewish School > Holocaust memorials > The Great Synagogue, now a Museum of the Holocaust. > Communist neighborhood "Unirii", which now replaces most of the historic Jewish quarter

Learn more about Marius

Marius

We are a group of friends who are passionate about our city: Marius, Claudia, Andreea & Cristina. Together, we will help you get lost in Bucharest! We've started guiding in 2013, after having traveled extensively. We are doing this because we truly believe Bucharest is misunderstood and insufficiently promoted as a tourist destination, but also because we genuinely love learning new things about this city every day. Our favorite past-time is getting lost in the city, exploring streets, buildings, historic events and personal stories of its residents, and trying to make sense of everything for you, the traveler.
