What you'll do

We’ll trace the fighting legacy of the Chinese immigrant experience in San Francisco's Chinatown from their arrival at “Gold Mountain” during the gold rush, the Tong Wars of the late 1800s, Bruce Lee's epic battles with Chinatown kung fu legends, and the Triad gang wars of the last few decades. We’ll begin our tour at a local Chinatown coffee shop. From there, we’ll discover San Francisco Chinatown past and present through the lens of what makes a city truly great: The notorious, colorful characters and the common folk's forgotten stories of struggle, conflict, endurance, and the relentless innovation and progress that emerges.

Prior to my consulting practice, I was vice president of creative strategy at the largest brand experience company in the world where I designed learning experiences for a wide range of organizations. I've lived in China and Taiwan for seven years, speak Mandarin, and received my M.A. in China studies (thesis on the Chinese Exclusion Acts). I'm also a longtime resident and lover of San Francisco and the martial arts. This tour represents the convergence and culmination of my personal passions: storytelling, San Francisco history, the Chinese experience and creating joy and fresh perspective for the seeker in us all. Where you'll be

We'll explore the streets, alleys, and secret landmarks of violence and vice in Chinatown over the past 170 years, from the Tong wars, murder and mayhem of the 1800s to the gangland hits of the Chinese triads of recent decades. We'll also follow in the footsteps of Bruce Lee and trace his experiences in SF Chinatown with the local community and how those interactions changed fighting and the perception of the Chinese worldwide forever.

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be cancelled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 10 guests ages 16 and up can attend. Occasionally the spirit will move some to finish up the tour at one of the nearby dive bars in Chinatown for an adult beverage. If the tour begins at 5 pm, we may begin the tour at one of these places UNLESS…

Government ID

You’ll need to take a picture of yourself that matches the photo on your ID. This is so Airbnb can confirm who’s actually going on the experience. You’ll only have to do this once.

More tips

This is NOT your standard vanilla tour. Stories are edgy, true stories of brutality, prostitution, drugs, and murder. If this concerns you, please find another tour -- we'll miss you though:-)
