What you'll do

We will travel to SUCHIAPA, a town of Zoque culture, leaving by public transport from San Cristobal de Las Casas (2 hours trip). We will observe and participate in the traditional party of CORPUS CRISTI which is represented with a dance of pre-Hispanic origin, DANZA CALALA (dance of a deer). We will meet famous tigers, Gigantillo, Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent) and Chamulas participatin in the dance. The experience is more than visual: it becomes unforgettable due to my explanations about the roots of the customs and the legends that you will hear. Thanks to that, you will see it from another perspective. It's not just a parade or a mask: there's a lot of history and faith behind it! Chiapas is a state rich in indigenous culture, traditions, customs that are expressed through colorful parades and ancestral dances. Each town has its own dress and masks. In addition, you will have the opportunity to try traditional food, visit local families, talk with them and share the joy of the party. The experience is available only on the days of Corpus Christi.

Rudy & Monika

I grew up with the traditions and legends of indigenous and mestizo peoples of Chiapas, where I come from. I learned them from my grandparents, parents and later, during my university career, I delved into several historical and social aspects. I also lived a historical moment in my city, witnessing the armed revolution of the EZLN (Zapatistas). My passion for traditions and legends continues to be more and more alive and I enjoy sharing it with travellers who visit Chiapas.
