What you'll do

Students will learn metal working skills then build a unique art project to take home.
There's no other class like it in America!

DETAILS:
JUST LIKE THOR [the God of Thunder]... you will harness the power of lightning at your fingertips!
Students will use a "Plasma" cutter, which cuts metal like butter. tudents learn proper use of grinding and sanding tools, and the MIG (wire feed) welding skills. Then we take 30 min break for lunch (on site). After lunch, students will pick through a selection of interesting and odd scrap metal items such as: old gears, pipe, springs, nuts/bolts, horseshoes, railroad spikes, motorcycle parts and stock metal supplies to cut up/use for creation of a one-of-a-kind piece of art!
[Training Time 3 hrs, Creative Time 3+ hrs until completion]

A FACE MASK AND ALL OTHER SAFETY GEAR WILL BE PROVIDED.

My name is Day. Over the past 12 years of being a Metal Artist and Mentor, I worked on many large-scale interactive metal sculptures. Most of which were designed for the Burning Man Festival and later installed around San Francisco, Ca area. I'm a member of the San Francisco collective known as the Flaming Lotus Girls. I've worked with world renowned artists such as Anish Kapoor and Brad Howe. More recently, I assisted in design and build of a Sculpture for Facebook and an "Art Car" for the founders of Google. In my spare time, I mentor teens in an Apprentice Program with the YoungSparksFoundation.org. Personally, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to offer folks an experience which may not otherwise be available to them. My goal is to have students gain comfort in tapping into the creative side of their brain and share those results.

Where you'll be

My workshop is in a warehouse where many large-scale projects have been built and are currently being built right now! During your visit, I can offer you a brief history of the art spawned from the local art community and if lucky we'll get to view art "in progress" that day! The building season for Burning Man art cars and projects is from March until end of August, every year!
[UPDATE: Covid lockdown has halted most local art projects].

I purchased the Metal Sculpture workshop for my partner, and he came back home absolutely happy. Here’s his review: “The workshop was great! The host is very warm, welcoming and passionate about what she does. The area, the maker space are worth visiting too even beyond the class. Day is a talented teacher: besides her thorough instructions, I also felt very welcome to ask for any advice or inspirational hint. I especially liked the lots of freedom one gets in the second part of the class when it comes to real sculpting! Hints and tips: – If you go for the first time – take a good sleep or rest before the class! it is a full day of standing and working with tools and metal parts. – Come prepared: think of a couple of ideas of what you’re willing to create. You won’t lose time on figuring out what to do if you have at least a mental sketch / a mood board, and some simple backup options. Many thanks to Day for this unforgettable experience!”

This was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had in the Bay Area. Day is a wonderful human and very gifted in her art/trade. She was willing to personalize the experience based on the person's interest and experience. This was our first time conducting metal work and it was just awesome. A truly unique and special experience.
